Overview

Any ambitious, hard-working student who wants to study in Australia should think about applying to the Holmesglen Institute. Located across seven campuses in Melbourne and wider Victoria, Holmesglen offers students a fun, diverse city life and a high standard of teaching quality. Melbourne is Australia’s biggest city, and of the 300,000 students currently studying and living there, more than 50,000 are enrolled at Holmesglen.

Holmesglen is one of the fastest-growing institutions of its kind. Across 10 academic departments and over 600 courses, tutors and lecturers deliver a practical, interactive learning experience. Students from almost 50 different countries are given the skills they need to become highly employable by the point of graduation.

There are postgraduate and undergraduate programmes available to prepare students for a career in anything from athletics to bar management, and there are no formal entry requirements, so most programmes are accessible to most students, including applicants from developing countries

.

Many learning resources and facilities are also available, including well-stocked libraries, study rooms and specialist laboratories. With such a wide range of study levels and subject areas available, there’s no student who can’t find what they’re looking for (and be fully supported in the pursuit of their dream career) at Holmesglen.

The on-campus and off-campus accommodation options offered by Holmesglen allow all the people enrolled at this university to fully enjoy Australian student life. There are even several dedicated international student communities at Holmesglen, places for overseas students settling in to get to know each other, socialising and studying together.

Plus, there are many student services and financial aid options like scholarships available to international students. Holmesglen’s student support services and counselling facilities are actually some of the best in Victoria. From amazing modern research centres to campuses in locations across the beautiful country of Australia, this is a great higher education option for students who want to enjoy their student life and maximise their job prospects through their academic life.

Teaching Quality

The teaching quality at Holmesglen is amazing. Located in Melbourne, one of Australia’s most exciting cities filled with personal and professional opportunities, Holmesglen aims to prepare students for life and work. It’s one of the largest providers of professional qualifications in the city and wider Australia, and it’s been recognised for its modern, effective practices in education, training and applied research.

There are over 600 programmes offered to students, including short courses, certificates, diplomas, and degrees. Across all study areas, academics are focused on excellence and student needs. Popular courses to study at Holmesglen include health sciences, nursing and community studies, fitness, wellbeing and tourism and events. All of these combine practical experience with expert knowledge and high-quality student-centred teaching.

The university’s courses, programmes and academics have been awarded for lots of community-focused activities. For example, Holmesglen chefs were the main part of an event run by Foodservice Australia earlier this year, and many students have been nominated for Victorian Training Awards in key areas like nursing, civil engineering and construction.

The quality teaching at Holmesglen prepares and equips students perfectly to do well in their studies and their professional lives after graduation. The student satisfaction rate is high, and the academic staff are dedicated to keeping it that way.

Entry Requirements

Holmesglen tries to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible, and there are very few formal entry requirements standing between a potential student and their application for admission. In terms of general university entry requirements, all applicants will be required to take a mathematics and literacy exam before gaining entry.

In terms of university requirements for specific courses, there are officially only education level requirements (i.e., at least Year 12 education or the equivalent in their country) and English language requirements, but applicants with good performance in relevant subjects might be more likely to be selected for a programme. Though there aren’t many certain rules, there are some key things that all applicants will be assessed on:

  • Their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or the equivalent
  • Their previous academic results (including previous university qualifications for postgraduate applicants)
  • Their written submission (if applicable)
  • Their portfolio presentation (if applicable)
  • Their level of English language ability

As an example, if an international student wants to study for a Certificate IV in interior design, they only need to meet certain English language requirements to be eligible. But if an international student wants to study for a bachelor’s degree in business (accounting), they need to have achieved good pass scores at Year 12 level of secondary school or the equivalent in their country (and they’re more likely to be selected if they performed well in mathematics, accounting, or economics subjects).

English Score Required

Because English is the language of teaching at Holmesglen, all international students have to demonstrate a certain level of skill in English to be considered for admission. Each of the programmes will have individual requirements, which will be listed on individual course pages on the Holmesglen website.

To give an example, an international student applying for a bachelor’s degree in information systems will need a minimum International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score of at least 6 or the equivalent score in a different testing method accepted by the university. For a Certificate IV qualification in health administration, this IELTS overall band score requirement will drop to a minimum of 5.5.

There are some English language pathway programmes for students who don’t speak English as a first or fluent additional language. The Pathway English programme helps students develop their writing, speaking, listening and reading skills so that they can apply for future studies at Holmesglen. Before being placed on a pathway course, all applicants will be interviewed and assessed on their language capabilities.

There are also several courses available for migrants to Australia. The Adult Migrant English Programme allows students to strengthen their English skills in all areas before they reach the vocational level. Many of the courses are designed for students to take their academic and study skills further, but the SLPET EAL II course also teaches them about the Australian workplace, from the language to the culture.

Admission

The university admission process for international students applying to Holmesglen includes a few different steps. Not all of the courses and qualifications at the university are available to international students, so step one is making sure that a programme is available to them (and then that they meet any entry requirements that do happen to apply).

Step two in the student admission journey is downloading the digital application form. Students will also need to make sure that they have any supporting documents ready, as they’ll need to include them when they submit the application. That documentation includes original and official academic transcripts from previous students and proof of English proficiency (if required), as well as the signature of a parent or guardian in the case of any applicant under the age of 18.

Step three is forwarding the admission application to the associate director of the university’s International Centre and paying an application fee of AUD 500 (unless applying through specific agents and education offices, in which case the application fee might be waived).

Step four is waiting to find out if an application has been successful. If it has been, applicants will receive a letter of offer. They will also discover the fee structure for their studies and be invited to pay their tuition fees for semester one, as well as apply for a student visa. A student visa is essential for studying in Australia and must be supplied upon arrival in the country.

International students must also get health insurance via the Overseas Student Health Cover scheme that covers all of their time studying at Holmesglen. Domestic and international applicants should note that they may be able to apply for credit standing if they have performed well and have relevant skills, qualifications or work experience.

Scholarships & Funding

There are a few different scholarships available to international students at Holmesglen. Whether a student is eligible for the scholarship could be based on several different factors, including academic performance and leadership. All university scholarships offered at Holmesglen are designed to help international students adapt to the costs of living in Australia, reducing their fees and providing a valuable form of funding support.

The Pathway to Victoria Scholarship is the largest scholarship on offer. It offers a discount of AUD 2,500 on the fees that a student must pay as part of their Holmesglen pathway programme. Students who are starting a packaged study plan at Holmesglen can apply. To get the funding, they must register for a second packaged pathway programme.

The Holmesglen Scholarships are offered to all international students. Students must apply by the deadline to receive the grant, and it covers AUD 1,000 of tuition fees. The scholarship aims to reflect the university’s core values of ambition, passion, respect and excellence. Full fee-paying students who show good academic skills, have other impressive achievements, and have great faculty references can apply after at least one year of study at Holmesglen.

The Endeavour Awards allow international students to apply for financial aid from the Australian government to help cover the cost of their tuition fees and living expenses. These awards are competitive, and all students are chosen based on their academic merit and financial need.

Because Holmesglen is a TAFE (Technical and Further Education) institution, international students can also apply for the Australia Awards. These are open to students from developing countries who want to study undergraduate or postgraduate courses and bring their skills back to their home countries, and they also help students financially, covering the costs of their tuition fees and living expenses.

University Structure

Holmesglen has seven campuses, a wide range of courses (free TAFE and Jobtrainer programmes, skill sets, apprenticeships, short courses, youth/secondary student programmes and degree programmes), multiple workshops and research centres. These are extremely useful to anybody who is studying for a qualification in construction-related fields. Other great facilities include:

  • The Centre for Applied Research and Innovation
  • The International Collaboration Centre
  • The Mackenzie Research Institute
  • The Holmesglen Employment Centre

Facilities

Across the seven Holmesglen campuses, all the facilities a student could need are available. This includes large libraries, well-equipped computer rooms, comfortable student activity centres for individual and group study, modern teaching rooms and large lecture theatres. The Holmesglen Library has lots of physical resources, but it also has a huge archive of electronic resources, including digital books, journals, and databases. It’s also a good place for students to access study guides and academic support options.

Holmesglen wants students to make their voices heard and encourages them to do this via the Student Association. The Student Association represents students and their academic concerns, giving every person enrolled a student representative to turn to for help, as well as organising events and social occasions to help students connect and make friends.

Outside the classroom, there are lots of great recreational activities offered by the Holmesglen Rec Team. They organise lots of things, including games, sports clubs in nearby student recreation centres and competitions around the country. All activities are affordable for students, and some are even free. There are also great on-campus and off-campus accommodation options for international students.

Speaking of off-campus student life at Holmesglen, this institute is located in the exciting Australian city of Melbourne. In a way, the whole of Melbourne is a student life centre, complete with some of the best bars, restaurants, and nightlife experiences in the entire country.

Accommodation

At Holmesglen, there are two types of university accommodation offered, as well as private rental options available off campus for those who would rather find a shared student house or rent a studio apartment. The student accommodation available through Holmesglen will either be institute accommodation or accommodation organised through the Homestay programme.

Institute accommodation is available to international students at the Chadstone, Waverley and Moorabbin campuses. Each student house has two to six private, furnished bedrooms with locks, and other living spaces are shared (including a fully equipped kitchen). There’s also free Wi-Fi and a monthly cleaning service for the communal areas. The weekly cost of institute accommodation is AUD 180, and students must supply a deposit of AUD 1,800 when they pay their tuition fees to book a room.

Through the Homestay programme, students will be introduced to a local family. This family will become their host family, and they’ll get the chance to experience true Australian culture. Applications are made through the Australian Homestay Network, and weekly rental fees will also be paid to the Australian Homestay Network.

Student Support

Holmesglen is 100 per cent committed to making sure that students feel comfortable during their studies at the institute. It wants them to feel important and safe to share any issues they might have. A range of student services and student support options can help with academic, physical and emotional problems. These student support services include:

  • Talks and discussion groups on subjects like managing stress, life planning and career goals
  • Access to student guides who can help a student through the complaints process and keep them informed about their rights
  • Online support services, study help and resources for remote students (and on-campus students when they happen to be elsewhere)
  • Free, private counselling and welfare support (online, in-person or by telephone) covering a large range of topics, from financial worries to addiction

Whenever Holmesglen teaching staff and support staff can help a student to feel happy, comfortable and heard at the university, they will. A big part of the reason why Holmesglen has such high student satisfaction levels is the complete student support programme, which always gives those enrolled the help they need, as soon as they need it.

Graduate Outcomes

Holmesglen has an impressive record for graduate outcomes in Victoria and wider Australia. As its reputation continues to grow, employers across the globe are happy with their Holmesglen hires. Getting an education at this university doesn’t just offer students the chance to develop practical skills, it also shapes them into strong individuals who want to make a positive impact in their community.

They can access employability workshops. They can get connected to valuable career contacts for volunteering and work placement opportunities.

For construction students, there’s a full apprenticeship training programme available, too. The chance is there to work with leading local companies across some of the best facilities in Melbourne, getting valuable work experience and improving practical skills on the job. For medical students, there’s the Royal Children’s Hospital placement programme, which has seen 10 Certificate I in Work Education students become ambassadors and maximise their post-graduation job prospects.

We have experienced a lack of efficiency and competance in all of our dealings with Holmesglen administration. The rate at which nothing happens is truly breathtaking and seems to stem from a general lack of giving a damn. This is written under an alias for fear of pissing them off and being subjected to even greater delays in "processing" than we have already endured. The course itself is OK but the organisation is shambolic. show less
