Having turned 50 in 2017, La Trobe University was ranked in the Top 50 Under 50 Universities (QS World University Rankings 2017) and is a young institution with a lot of ambition. La Trobe offers a wide variety of support services so that international students feel at home in Australia as soon as they arrive. These include residential mentors to help first-year students transition smoothly into university life in a different country, an International Student Advisory Network and one-to-one support on anything from visa issues to problems with study workload.
Students can pick from nine different campus locations, meaning they have a choice of what will work best for them. The following is a snapshot of a few significant recent developments, among many others, at La Trobe University:
The Times Higher Education ranking, one of the major rankings in global academics, has placed La Trobe in the top-400 university bracket. Further, the ranking has placed the University’s Arts & Humanities department in the top 200 in the world, which translates to the department being in the top one per cent globally.
La Trobe University has instituted a new Career Ready Mentoring program, where students will be matched with industry professionals in their area of interest, who will share with them their experience and expertise. This helps students strengthen and build their network and gain uniquely qualified insight into their areas of professional interest.
La Trobe University’s new AUD10 million Sydney campus has been opened at Hyde Park. Technology-enhanced adjustable teaching spaces and hi-tech audio-visual equipment are notable features of this campus. The building has an A-grade, 5-star NABERS Energy rating, is flooded with natural light and has views of Hyde Park and the city.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered across all listed subject areas. Undergraduate studies, which lead to the award of a bachelor's degree, usually take around three years. Postgraduate or master’s degrees require further studies through coursework in a discipline similar to the student’s first degree, though there are cases where the course may be in a different field.
Research degrees lead to the award of a master’s by research degree, PhD or Doctorate.
Students who pursue research degrees must meet language and academic requirements and find a suitable La Trobe University supervisor.
There are also bridging courses and pathways in English and Foundation studies and Diplomas, offered through La Trobe College Australia. These help non-native English speakers to gain the necessary skills to progress on to a program of study at the University.
Programs in all subject areas at La Trobe are highly industry-oriented and provide students with a great chance to gain valuable experience and build professional networks through internships and industry placements.

The La Trobe Student Union hosts many social and cultural events. The Union is also in charge of running Rabelais, the student magazine produced by students for students, since 1967.

International students applying for entry into a bachelor’s degree program at La Trobe University should have completed the equivalent, in their respective countries, of the Australian Year 12 with a certain grade.
Entry into a postgraduate degree program at La Trobe University requires the completion of the equivalent of an Australian bachelor’s degree, with the required grade. In some cases, prior learning developed through relevant work experience or professional accreditation may be considered, where it is deemed to be equivalent to the learning obtained through a bachelor’s degree.
For admission to a master's by research degree, students must have completed a bachelor's degree with Honours, at a H1 or H2A level or equivalent, from La Trobe or another recognised university or educational institution in their country. Applicants with Honours at H2B may be considered in some instances.
To be considered for admission to the Professional Doctorate or a PhD, students need to have completed a master's degree or bachelor's degree with Honours and have at least three years' relevant professional experience, and present evidence of research expertise.
La Trobe University requires international students to meet certain levels of proficiency in English to be eligible for admission. Students applying for undergraduate degree courses must have scored the equivalent of a 6.0 in the IELTS with no band score less than 6.0. Those applying for postgraduate coursework and research degree programs need the equivalent of a 6.5 in the IELTS, with no band score less than 6.0. Other select English test scores are also considered.

La Trobe offers international students a wide range of accommodation options to choose from, depending on their requirements and budget. Options include on-campus residential accommodation and off-campus accommodation.
Accommodation Services at La Trobe will provide eligible international students with temporary accommodation for a period of one to three weeks when they first arrive at the University, chargeable at the daily rate of the residence in which they will be temporarily located.
There is also a wide range of off-campus housing that students can explore, each with different benefits and costs. Sharing a rented house or flat with other people is generally the most economical, flexible and popular form of off-campus accommodation. Students can either choose to move into an existing shared house, or organise a group to establish a new shared house.

This scholarship is meant for high-achieving international students accepted into undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs. The scholarships are worth between a 15%, 20% and 25% deduction on annual fees, and are limited in number.
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet certain English language and academic entry requirements, such as an International Baccalaureate Diploma score of at least 26 or higher (Australian Equivalency), for undergraduate studies, or a weighted average mark of at least 65 per cent or higher for postgraduate coursework studies.
These are scholarships worth up to AUD5,000, for international students studying at one of La Trobe’s regional campuses. Students must meet the English language and academic requirements for their course, and have an unconditional offer for an undergraduate or postgraduate programme at one of the University’s regional campuses.
These scholarships are for students applying to be postgraduate researchers at La Trobe. International applicants can also apply for scholarships to fund their tuition fees, and in some cases, a stipend to assist them with their living expenses.
Other scholarships on offer include the La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (LTUPRS) and the La Trobe University Full Fee Research Scholarships (LTUFFRS), for full-time research master's or PhD candidates, and outstanding international applicants respectively.
