The University of Queensland launched a makerspace of world-class standards, placing this top 50-university at the forefront of hands-on education in the country.
The new makerspace facilities, UQ Innovate, are the largest of its kind in the country. The space features a 1200 square metre workshop with advanced prototyping and manufacturing machines and tools. Some equipment include 3D printers, vacuum formers, waterjet cutters, and industrial robots.
Professor Vicki Chen, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology said that these new facilities would give students at UQ a competitive edge over others while entering the job market.
“One of our main roles as a university is to give our students the confidence and capability to embrace the challenges of a changing world. With the launch of UQ Innovate, we are in a much stronger position to fuel their curiosity, so they can drive sustainable solutions at the cutting edge, today and tomorrow,” he added.
Design and build teams from UQ Racing and UQ Space teams have used the university’s expertise and facilities to produce competitive rockets and race cars on a national level.
Myrthe Snoeks, Managing Director of UQ Space and engineering and arts student said that her team was able to accomplish a lot in the past year owing to UQ’s facilities and support, including becoming a winner of the 2019 Australian University Rocket Competition, which will be strengthened with the addition of the new makerspace.
Myrthe also said, “With the launch of these new facilities, we have the tools we need to tackle even more exciting and challenging projects, with the aim to go further than any Australian university team has gone before.”
The university’s teachers are the most highly awarded in Australia. UQ has won more national teaching awards than any other Australian university, testament to the innovative and professional teaching approach taken by the institution. “I’ve always had a passion for marine life and felt this course with a major in marine science would help me better understand the issues threatening marine biodiversity. As a marine science major student, I chose this university for my bachelor degree as UQ is known for its exceptional research facilities and supportive advisors who can offer insights into various areas of interest in the science field. Furthermore, with research stations located on North Stradbroke Island and Heron Island near the Great Barrier Reef, students can visit a wide range of places to carry out research projects and to gain valuable skills and experiences.”+ Read more - Show less

“UQ has had an excellent global reputation in the area of agriculture for a long time. The four year Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Honours) program is structured in a way that equips students with substantial knowledge in different disciplines of agricultural science. Brisbane is a really warm and pleasant city with plenty of friendly and helpful people. As an agriculture student, I spent my first three years at the Gatton campus - a peaceful and stimulating place. Living in Gatton has provided me with many opportunities to explore, enjoy and appreciate the nature around campus (especially bird watching). Now I am in my final year at the main St Lucia campus. St Lucia offers me a very different study environment to Gatton; there are more students here and it is closer to the city. However, both campuses offer an excellent quality of teaching and facilities. Most of the lecturers and staff are very friendly and approachable. I also really enjoyed doing some of the genetics courses. If prospective students are interested in doing genetics related programs, UQ is definitely the place to be.”+ Read more - Show less
