Join Lakeland College
The Government of Alberta has recently announced that it will invest CAD 17.3 million into Lakeland College’s WHT Mead Animal Science Centre. This is to enhance student-led learning in commercial agriculture. It will also create many new jobs in the region. The funds will be put towards expanding facilities where more students can pursue a wider range of programs in modern learning spaces.
The Government of Saskatchewan announced annual funding of CAD 1.1 million to assist Lakeland College in delivering accredited training and job skills programs that meet the needs of industry.
Lakeland College is a DLI (Designated Learning Institution) that has been identified by the provincial government for having a COVID-19 readiness plan in place for receiving international students. The college is strictly following health guidance and there are staggered schedules and risk strategies in place. Everyone on campus is required to wear a face covering.
Programs are taught via blended delivery, where students learn in classrooms, labs and online where necessary. Students still benefit from work-integrated learning and other essential opportunities. If international students are unable to travel to Canada, they can begin some of their programs remotely.

Lakeland College has the largest student-managed farm in Canada where students have the opportunity to use their skills whether they are working in the small animal clinic, showing purebred cattle or making decisions about crops.

This area combines power engineering and heavy oil operations to broaden future job opportunities beyond the oil and gas industry by offering a couple of programs.

The countryside campus is home to outdoor learning environments including the college emergency training grounds and environmental science field labs. It also features modern classrooms, computer labs, on-campus student accommodation and the largest student-managed farm in Canada.
The urban campus’ facilities are all under one roof. Featuring modern classrooms, a weight room, the Vic Juba Community Theatre and the Bill Kondro Wing, which houses a student lounge, computer lab and nursing demonstration site.
Services can primarily be found in the campus library, where there is access to accessibility services, study skills, student success strategists and peer tutors.

Finally, it is important to mention that there is no public bus service in either Lloydminster or Vermilion, however students regularly find shared transportation.
Lakeland has a wide-range of awards, scholarships and bursaries supported by individuals and corporations. Lakeland College offers financial support and awards, some are available to international students after the first semester. Although there are not entrance scholarships in place for international students, there are other advantages that make Lakeland more affordable than other places in Canada.
There is no provincial sales tax in the province of Alberta. Another advantage is that basic health services in Alberta are free of charge for international students through the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP).
The Lakeland region has the highest minimum wage in Canada starting at CAD 15 per hour. Upon arrival into Lakeland students can qualify to work up to 20 hours per week off campus and full-time during scheduled breaks such as spring break, winter holidays and summer holidays.

International students then have the chance to transition to permanent residency in either Saskatchewan or Alberta. Through a postgraduate work permit (PGWP), students can stay and work in Canada for one year (certificate graduates) and up to three years (diploma graduates).
The average tuition for international students is around CAD 8,000 per semester. There is also a CAD 90 application fee, a tuition deposit and student fees. The student fees include the mandatory one-year ‘Guard Me’ health insurance. These total to approximately CAD 16,000 depending on the chosen academic program. Fees are subject to change.
