Overview

Overview

Students with a passion for the climate should know about the Memorial University of Newfoundland (or MUN for short). It’s as far east as it’s possible to be in the country of Canada, on the east side of an island surrounded by the Atlantic ocean. Over 19,000 students come together at MUN across more than 100 unique degree programmes.

3,400 of these students are international, arriving from over 110 countries. International students make up 20 per cent of the student population of MUN and 40 per cent of all graduate students. MUN is committed to welcoming students from all backgrounds, and there are dedicated offices on campus to make sure international students get all the help they need.

This includes travel and visa advice, welcome events and activities, events throughout the year and lots of community support. The Grenfell Campus hosts an English as a second language learning unit with specialist English courses and bridging programmes.

Grenfell is one of six amazing MUN campus locations. Other sites include the Marine Institute, one of the world’s largest marine facilities accessible to students, and the Labrador Campus, which contains the School of Arctic and Subarctic Studies. If students are dreaming of a life in the UK, there’s also the Harlow Campus over in England, providing the MUN experience in a new, British countryside setting.

Students also have the option of online study at MUN. It leads the field in online learning, offering 475 different courses online in a choice of 40 subject areas. This means students can add to the MUN legacy from home, no matter where they’re physically located in the world.

Some talented, expert researchers and award-winning lecturers and tutors are based at MUN, earning the university a lot of deserved recognition. It’s not just the university that’s been recognised with different awards and honours over the years, it’s the individuals who make up the faculty too. It’s easy to see why so many students choose to start their higher education journey (or continue it for postgraduates) at MUN.

Teaching Quality

At MUN, the faculty has a well-earned reputation for teaching quality. There have been nine 3M Teaching Fellowships awarded, five staff members have won the Atlantic Association of Universities’ Distinguished Teacher Awards, and two have won respected mentoring awards.

There are 31 fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, 19 fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and 13 fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Plus, the expert researchers working out of the university are noted to be among the world’s top two per cent of scientists. Students feel all of this achievement and excellence in their learning.

Quality teaching is high up on MUN’s priority list. When looking at past students' achievements, this is clear. In the academic year of 2021–2022, some achieved awards and scholarships from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Others received research awards, and some were recognised for their academic merit.

The student-to-faculty ratio of 16 to one also helps to keep up the high-quality teaching standards. Every student is supported and encouraged to be the best they can be. No student is ignored or left behind at MUN. Every student is listened to.

MUN ranks in the top 1,000 universities globally. In 2022, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy placed MUN 38th in the top 50. The World University Rankings placed it between 601st and 800th. The institution is even more recognised and competitive in the field of marine and ocean engineering. It’s the top Canadian university in this subject area and has been for five years running.

University Business Incubators named MUN as a ‘top challenger’ in North America, and its Centre for Entrepreneurship is emerging into the top five entrepreneurial centres globally. The reputation of MUN is only growing and improving with time, and the high standards for teaching and research should suit any student dreaming of a great education followed by a great professional career.

Entry Requirements

MUN is a competitive university that gets lots of applicants, national and international, each year across its undergraduate programmes, postgraduate programmes and wide range of online courses. Every applicant has to go through general admissions and their qualifications/full application with be assessed by the student admission team against the university entry requirements.

All applicants must first meet the general admission requirements. These will vary depending on a student’s past education and their age (needs are slightly different for mature and senior students). There’s more information about university requirements on the MUN website, but generally, students will need to have reached the right equivalent level of study (end of high school in the US, end of college or sixth form in the UK, and so on).

If applicants meet these entry requirements and any course-specific requirements, they can apply for general admission. For certain subjects and programmes, there are also competitive entry programmes to apply to, and direct entry to these limited programmes is also possible if the applicant meets the right university qualifications.

Competitive entry programmes run from the St John’s Campus and the Grenfell Campus. Students can choose between undergraduate degrees in arts, science, business or sustainability, as well as a specific BA programme in arts for international students.

English Score Required

Every student who goes to MUN must show that they have a good enough understanding of the English language to get through their studies successfully. There are some university-wide standards to meet, but international applicants are encouraged to look into any specific English scores/English requirements needed for the course they want to study.

Generally, every undergraduate student will need to achieve an IELTS overall band score of at least 6.5, with at least a 6 in the individual reading and writing bands. There are other accepted test alternatives to the IELTS, fully listed on the website, and proof of English understanding can also be shown through:

  • Three years in full-time learning at an English language secondary institution, including English at grade 12 or equivalent (an English as a second language course doesn’t count)
  • 30 credit hours at a recognised post-secondary institution where the language of instruction is English (this must include six transferable credit hours in English courses)
  • A completed University College Pathway Level 500, with a minimum grade of 75 per cent

MUN also offers an ESL programme (English as a Second Language) to students who don’t quite meet the required English score. This programme can be completed at the Grenfell Campus, getting international students up to the right English standard before they continue their studies.

Admission

The student admission process will begin once a student decides on and applies for their course. The application process will be different depending on the applicant's previous education and background. This may highlight opportunities for bursaries and/or funding.

Once an application is submitted, the university admission portal on the MUN website will ask the student to upload their supporting documents. These documents are outlined on the website's admission requirements pages, and, again, can change from student to student.

Early acceptance may be offered, but acceptance is only fully confirmed once an application has been processed and the supporting documents needed have been shared with MUN. These documents must be submitted by the relevant document deadlines. When an application is made and the documents are submitted, the admissions team will start to process student applications.

MUN recommends that students awaiting admission consider their finances. Fees and costs applied to students at this university will include tuition, residential fees, meal plans, health insurance and student union fees. Some costs change from campus to campus, so students should make sure they know where they’ll be before they start working out the overall cost of year one at MUN.

Scholarships & Funding

MUN offers a limited number of entrance scholarships and awards to undergraduate applicants. Students graduating from Canadian high schools will be granted a standard university scholarship if they average 75 per cent when their final grades are compiled. International students are automatically considered (additional application is needed) for a few different entrance scholarships, including:

  • The Memorial University of Newfoundland International Entrance Scholarship
  • The IUGS Entrance Scholarship for Undergraduate Students
  • The Fortis Inc. – H. Stanley Marshall Scholarship
  • The Killam American Undergraduate Scholarship
  • The Don and Mona Dooley (OLOF) Thailand Scholarship
  • The Shona Perry-Maidment Entrance award

In addition to these, international students are entered into the International Undergraduate Academic Awards. These give the top international students at an undergraduate level, in terms of academic achievement, CAD 2,500, and they’re awarded every autumn.

Students are eligible once they have completed at least two full semesters at MUH. Other options for awards are The September 11, 2001 International Award and the Shahana Islam Memorial Award. Once again, this funding is only available to students currently studying.

Many other application-based university scholarships are available to different groups of students enrolled at MUN. Students from Indigenous backgrounds are eligible for help with fees through bursaries, as are students with Chinese heritage, refugee status, or children or grandchildren of Canadian Korean war veterans. The university provides disability bursaries, dependents of teachers bursaries and bursaries for women.

No matter the student or the student’s background, MUN has a funding option available to them. All applicants to MUN would be advised to apply for any suitable scholarships that ask for an application, in addition to the scholarships they will be automatically assessed for.

University Structure

With over 100 degree programmes in fields from anthropology to folklore, there’s a passion for learning in all its forms at MUN. There are six MUN campuses, and each one has its own special facilities/focus areas:

  • St John’s Campus is home to teaching, research and administration facilities
  • The Marine Institute is a leading marine training facility
  • Grenfell Campus is home to liberal arts and science programmes
  • Signal Hill Campus is a place for students to discuss 21st-century issues like climate change
  • Harlow Campus is over in the UK, a great chance for MUN students to study abroad
  • Labrador Campus is the newest, a site that plans to focus on research, education, policy and outreach (by and for the North)

Beyond the campuses, Bonne Bay May Station, Holyrood Marine Base and the Ocean Sciences Centre are all important, modern research centres that will be available to MUN students studying the relevant courses. Institut Frecker is another hub of student activity, running four-week immersion programmes for students who have completed a French 1502 and achieved at least 65 per cent.

Facilities

When it comes to facilities, MUN has it all. The University Centre, a popular student life centre on the St John’s Campus, has both a food court (serving snacks from falafel to fries) and a student-owned bar named The Breezeway on the first floor.

The Main Dining Hall is also at St John’s (food provided by Aramack). At the Marine Institute, students can find traditional fish and chips to try in the perfect setting. Or, they can get a taste of English dining in the Botanical Garden’s beautiful café, where traditional teas and all-day breakfasts are very popular with hungry students.

The facilities for sports and exercise are also amazing at MUN, and there are lots of good places to use up some energy after a long day in the lecture theatre. The Works is Atlantic Canada’s largest facility of its kind, a student recreation centre with lots of different options (as the name suggests). The Aquarena, one special part of The Works, is a swimmer’s paradise with an Olympic-sized pool, diving towers and a swinging rope.

Taking things outdoors, The Grand Concourse is a hiking trail of 125km, connected by ponds and rivers and filled with great green spaces. Whatever the kind of student activity centre a person is searching for at MUN, they can find it. From the well-equipped libraries to the local pubs to the beautiful parks, there’s nothing not accessible to students while they study in this special location at this respected institution.

Accommodation

There’s lots of student accommodation at MUN. It’s a university that works hard to make living on campus easy, safe and centred around the idea of community. Students often make lasting friendships with the people they meet in their university accommodation.

Undergraduate and graduate students can apply for student houses, and they have a variety of options. Students who want to be central to the university’s modern facilities should consider Paton College (CAD 1,947 per semester), Macpherson College (CAD 2,591 per semester) or Burton’s Pond Apartments (CAD 2,408 per semester). These options are within walking distance of MUN’s most useful spaces, including The Works, the library, dining options, classrooms, and lecture theatres.

The Signal Hill Campus is easy to reach by shuttle bus and provides 87 rooms for postgraduate students. For those who would like to explore life outside of the university, the area around St John’s Campus offers plenty of private student accommodation options. MUN would recommend that students do lots of research before becoming renters, especially if they are coming into their first year at the university.

Student Support

MUN offers some great student support to all the people attending the university. Its accessibility services (through The Blundon Centre) empower disabled students to get the most out of university life, socially and academically. Help for future graduates can be found at the Career Development Office, where planning for the future is based on personal strengths and goals.

The Student Support Office has a full student support programme in place. Students are helped to protect their wellbeing physically and emotionally every step of the way, and a trained team of student guides can sit down with struggling students and help them through their stresses, whether academic or personal. Graduate Outcomes

Graduates from MUN are professional, prepared and ready to explore their career options. They’ve been trained by the best to do their best. Plus, average salaries grow the more time a person spends learning at MUN. Students graduating from the university's Political Science course with an MA earn 49 per cent more than those graduating with only a BA.

The great job prospects MUN graduates enjoy aren’t just thanks to good teaching. The university's Career Development Office guides students well, pushing them towards careers they feel passionate about. Employment services available at the university include volunteering and work placement programmes, skills workshops and networking events (like the Career and Graduate School Fair). There’s also a Career Week every year, and more career services are accessible to MUN students online.

Students can also book one-to-one sessions with an expert career guide to talk everything through. There’s no end to the help on offer at MUN when it comes to starting a career, finding the right professional path and entering the workplace.

MUN is also a very popular place for undergraduates to continue their studies and become postgraduate students. Academic researchers are a huge part of MUN’s great reputation, and some of the people who attend MUN go on to become these awarded, appreciated researchers.
