Overview

The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), located in Edmonton, Alberta, is one of Canada's largest and leading polytechnic schools. NAIT offers degree, diploma and certificate programs in business, science and technology, health and life sciences, and skilled trades. The institution focuses on applied teaching and learning designed to meet the demands of industry – graduates have the knowledge and skills employers want. Students leave confident, prepared and ready to work. 86% of NAIT graduates find employment within a few months of completing their studies.

NAIT has a diverse student community, with students from over 91 countries. Many services are provided for international students, such as access to certified immigration consultants at no charge, additional help for those with learning barriers, confidential counselling and settlement services.

Studying in Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta, means that students can enjoy the largest urban park in North America – 22 times the size of New York City's Central Park. Edmonton is a vibrant city with various art galleries, museums, coffee shops, a thriving culinary industry and North America’s largest shopping and entertainment centre.

Students can also visit the Rocky Mountains in Jasper, Banff and Lake Louise – some of the world’s most awe-inspiring mountain destinations and just a short drive from Edmonton.

What’s new

NAIT is the number one choice of higher-education institutes for international students in Canada.

One of the latest surveys by the Canadian Bureau for International Education has highlighted that international students voted NAIT one of the best polytechnics in Canada for all-round experience and career prospects.

The survey, run by Canada’s main organization for international education, showed students praising the institute’s abilities in equipping them for real-life in the Canadian workplace. Further, the survey revealed students noted excellent satisfaction levels with the high duty of care received from university staff. In addition, out of the 46 educational centers included in the research NAIT was found to be the campus where students felt safest.

The survey took place in 2018 from February to April. Out of approximately 1,750 NAIT international students 145 students took part in the study, equating to 8.4% of all overseas students.

Teaching quality

NAIT strives to uphold its position as a globally acclaimed polytechnic and Canada’s most dynamic and forward-thinking higher-education centre. Entry requirements

English Language Proficiency (ELP)

All NAIT programs are taught in English, therefore it is essential that students pass the ELP requirements to qualify for certificate, diploma and degree courses. Raising English language levels is not an issue for overseas students at NAIT as the institute provides in-house English as a Second Language (ESL) lessons. Once students have completed ESL Level six they will be able to pursue the majority of NAIT programs.

Formal Assessment (ESL Examination)

If an applicant is unable to meet the English Language Proficiency requirement, a formal assessment is required. Exam results are valid for two years after the test date.

Funding and Financial

International students are encouraged to apply for any scholarship/bursary that is not restricted to Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

International students have the chance for enrolment on two specifically designed scholarship programs.

The International Scholarship tied to Program of Study

This scholarship provides the opportunity for four students per year to receive CAD 2500. One scholarship is available for each subject classification. This program is applicable to academically remarkable overseas students in years 2, 3 or 4 of a credit program. Students applying for this scholarship must have a GPA of at least 2.7.

The scholarships are classified as follows:

The International Community Builder Scholarship

International students who have actively made a positive difference on campus and are studying in year 2, 3 or 4 of a credit program are able to apply for this scholarship. It is aimed at students who have made a considerable effort to enhance campus life, for example volunteering their time to campus causes, mentoring other students or being active in student events or activities. Students applying for this scholarship must have a GPA of at least 2.0. There is a total of four scholarships on offer each year and successful applicants will receive CAD 2500.

In addition: Students from overseas may also apply for other NAIT Bursary or Scholarship programs that do not specifically indicate “Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents only."

Student Support

The university aims for students to feel supported, comfortable and happy at NAIT. They aim to provide a range of services to enhance the student experience.

International Centre

The International Centre provides support to international students. This includes Regulated International Student Immigration Advisors (RISIAs) who assist with immigration and Visa related issues. Staff are both knowledgeable and compassionate, providing a supportive space for students.

Academic and Career Services

NAIT students have access to a team of advisors. They provide helpful advice about academic planning and career options after graduation. Included in the services are resume reviews and job interview practice.

Learning Services

Learning Services staff work collaboratively with students and instructors to reduce barriers to learning. Students can access a variety of resources and services such as learning strategy sessions, tutoring, supplemental learning, learning skills workshops, disability support and more.

Counselling Centre

Counselling is a free, confidential service for all NAIT students. The Counselling Centre provides students with a holistic approach to mental health and wellbeing. NAIT also have a dedicated counsellor for international students who assist with their transition to Canadian life.

Accommodation

NAIT students have access to student residences at two partner universities. Both options are accessible by the light transit railway system or by public bus. While living at these university campuses, students will also have access to all the community resources available to each resident, including fitness facilities and WiFi.

Sports & clubs

Students have the opportunity to join a number of sports leagues as well as recreational sport. This includes everything from co-ed volleyball to ice hockey. Students can also join one of more than 70 different clubs at the institution catering for a wide variety of interests.

ESL

NAIT’s English as a Second Language program provides high-quality, professional language training that prepares students for their post-secondary education and the workforce. Students learn by engaging in the direct application of language skills. Through group work and class presentations, students learn writing and grammar, build confidence in speaking and pronunciation, while developing academic reading and vocabulary skills.

About the program:

NAIT offers six levels of ESL instruction, from high beginner (levels 1, 2 and 3) to high intermediate (levels 4, 5 and 6). Students write a placement test to determine their starting level.
1 level = 15 weeks (or 1 semester)
Cost: CAD 4580 per level (or 1 full-time semester). Cost subject to change.
Applications online only
Start in Fall (September), Winter (January) or Spring (May)
Each level teaches speaking and listening, reading and vocabulary, writing and grammar, preparation for academic study at NAIT, and practical skills for studying and living in Canada.
Classes are small, only 15-20 students, focusing on applied learning and hands-on activities.

Once students complete Level 6, they can apply to most programs at NAIT.
