Trent is constantly innovating to give students the best possible experience. Recent developments include:
Features of the new library include an entrepreneurship and social innovation center, an educational design research studio, group and individual student spaces for interactive study, a Critical Making Studio and new book and non-print collections.
The Durham GTA Campus, based in Oshawa, is being developed to include new residence rooms (Opening fall 2020), new academic spaces including faculty offices and classrooms, and a new central outdoor space for student enjoyment.
Trent University has been chosen as a Rowing Canada NextGen Hub, in partnership with the Peterborough Rowing Club, which means it will be a place for future Olympians to develop their rowing.
Opened in 2017, the new Student Centre on the Peterborough campus is a place for students to gather, study, engage, socialize and get involved with life on campus. The building has views over the Otanabee River, and is at the heart of the student experience on campus.
Programs of study are placed across different campuses and different colleges, so students will need to be aware of this when making an application. Programs are available across a range of subjects, including arts and sciences, and there are a number of schools operating on campus:
The School of Education is dedicated to giving students the skills they need to thrive in the education profession. Programs include the Teacher Education Stream for those who would like to teach, the Consecutive B. Ed. Program for those interested in teaching either Primary/Junior or Intermediate/Senior education and the Master of Education in Educational Studies. There is also a course in Educational and Community Leadership aimed at professionals looking to further their career into leadership roles and focused action.
The newly named School of Environment encompasses a range of programs that have been developed at Trent over many years, making it a choice university for future environmental leaders. Programs include BA or BSc’s in Geography, Ecological Restoration, Environmental Chemistry, Water Sciences and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. The graduate programs include Environmental and Life Science and Sustainability Studies. Students are also able to undertake joint majors, both within and outside of the school, in order to tailor their degree to their interests.
The Trent-ESL program is a Languages Canada accredited program, designed for international students who require additional teaching in English language. ESL programs can be a good place to start the university experience. Students who pass the ESL program can then progress into an academic program, with most students who complete the program graduating to an undergraduate or graduate course at Trent. With a friendly campus community, and access to both smaller towns and bigger cities, international students can settle into a new way of learning as well as a new language.
The curriculum is designed so that students will be able to undertake the demands of a degree afterwards, and with a continual admission option, some students will even begin their degree courses at the same time as undergoing the ESL program. It is also an intensive program, which means students can graduate quickly to achieve their goals at university.
There are six levels of ESL study, from Core 1 to Degree, depending on the language requirements of each student. As well as developing reading, listening, writing, speaking, pronunciation and grammar, ESL students learn academic requirements such as research, analysis and presentation skills.
Every course has its own entrance requirements, but there are some overall entrance requirements for Trent University. All students applying will need a high school diploma.
All applicants will need to pass the minimum requirements of an English proficiency test. Requirements for the TOEFL are a minimum score of 93 IBT with a writing score of at least 22. For the IELTS, applicants will need a score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0. For the MELAB, applicants will need a score of 85, with no part below 80. For the CAEL, applicants will need a score of 60. The Pearson PTE Academic requirement is 59, and the C1 Advanced requirement is a C grade.
The required grades applicants will need in order to be considered depends on their country of education. Requirements by country should be checked before undertaking an application.
Trent has been ranked the number one university in Canada for scholarships and bursaries. There are a number of scholarships and awards particularly aimed at international students.
This scholarship is awarded to incoming international students who show academic achievement, dedication to community service, and leadership potential, but are also in some financial need. The scholarship contributes to tuition and is worth between USD 2000 and USD 24,000 per academic year. It cannot be used to pay for housing.
This scholarship is awarded to an incoming international student from a UWC college who can demonstrate academic achievement, a dedication to community service, has leadership potential and is in financial need. The scholarship is up to USD 24,000 per academic year depending on financial need.
This scholarship is specifically for a student joining Trent from Pearson College of the Pacific. The student must show academic achievement, community service, leadership potential and financial need and the scholarship can be up to USD 22,000 per academic year depending on financial need.
This scholarship is open to any student incoming to Trent from a country where Scotiabank operates. It is based on academic achievement, a student’s dedication to extra-curricular activities and their leadership, and is worth up to USD 5000 per academic year.
This scholarship is open to any student incoming to Trent from a Maple Leaf Education System school who can demonstrate academic achievement, leadership potential, a dedication to community service and who is in financial need. It is a one-off award for up to five students a year to the value of USD 2000.
Trent University has excellent facilities across both campuses.
Recently developed into the new ‘library of the future’, the Bata Library is one of the main academic spaces for students on campus. With books, resources and IT services, as well as a range of study spaces, it suits the needs of all students looking for somewhere quiet or collaborative to work on campus. New features include a presentation practice room and two new graduate reading rooms. The brand-new entrepreneurship and social innovation center is designed to help students with experiential learning projects, and those undertaking work placements. The two new visualization labs are dedicated to new technological advancements including 3D printing and virtual reality.
For use by students both recreationally and academically, the Trent Athletics Centre has state-of-the-art facilities both outdoor and indoor including a gym, basketball and badminton courts and indoor soccer pitch. Some students will wish to join Varsity Sports and play for the university, and the university has an excellent reputation for curling, lacrosse, rowing, rugby, soccer and volleyball. Other students may wish to join one of the many sports and athletics clubs. As well as the facilities on campus, students are right next door to diverse nature areas with kilometers of hiking trails nearby.
There are accommodation options on both the Peterborough and Durham campuses. Living on campus can be a great way to meet new people and be part of the campus community, especially for first year students. Housing doesn’t just mean a room, they also include dining halls and lounges, and give students closer access to student services and faculty offices for academic and personal support. There is particular housing available for graduate students, offering more self-contained apartments for older students.
