Overview

Jilin University (JLU) was founded in 1946 and has grown into one of China’s most famous and well-respected university establishments. It’s known for community impact across the country, as well as high-quality teaching standards and high levels of student satisfaction. Over 70,000 students are currently enrolled across the wide range of courses and programmes offered at JLU, and just over 2,000 of these are international students.

JLU’s reputation is growing in and out of China, and the university is excited to welcome more overseas students each academic year. The student experience in the exciting city of Changchun is very fun in and out of lessons, and there are many chances to enjoy Chinese culture, make new friends and try some unique extracurricular activities.

There are 256 registered student associations at JLU, and the International Students Association makes sure all students are connected on campus. Nobody is isolated, and every person enjoys a welcoming, friendly environment and atmosphere.

Five of China’s national key laboratories are at JLU, and its library is used by UNESCO, the UN (United Nations) and the World Bank. JLU students can access an endless archive of resources, great technology and comfortable study rooms. All the facilities help those enrolled to become experts in their fields and stay fully involved and connected to the learning experience.

There are lots of great scholarships and support options for international students at this institution. Often, these scholarships cover all tuition fees and funding, and some are offered specifically to students who are aiming to take their new skills back to their home country and make improvements. Other support services include psychological counselling, academic tutoring and peer-to-peer guidance. Students always have somewhere to turn when they need help.

Any international student searching for a modern, interactive educational experience in an exciting Chinese city should consider applying to JLU, a university with a growing global reputation and strong graduate outcomes.

Teaching Quality

The teaching quality at JLU is amazing, and it’s become one of the best universities in China thanks to its consistent, quality teaching and its huge number of resources and learning support materials. It’s also getting recognised globally and now ranks in the top 500 according to the 2022 QS World University Rankings.

JLU houses five key research laboratories and eight national bases for the development of science. It’s one of the most important educational institutions in North-East China, and it’s given students the chance to take part in some amazing research opportunities, integrating them into their studies and increasing their employability significantly.

The university’s clinical medicine courses are considered some of the best in China, and its medical school is ranked 12th in the country. It also has a national key discipline in neurology. Every degree programme, from environmental science to diplomatic studies, is delivered to a high standard by experienced tutors and lecturers who put student needs first and prepare students to succeed beyond their academic studies.

JLU’s faculty are some of the highest achievers in China. The university employs 11 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. There are also 37 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund on staff and 89 Changbai Mountain Scholars. With so many amazing academics at the university, high-quality teaching is a guarantee.

Entry Requirements

JLU offers 115 undergraduate programmes, 192 master’s programmes and 105 doctoral programmes in total. The entry requirements for any applicant, domestic or overseas, will depend on their level of study and the course they’re planning to apply for.

For example, university requirements for an international student applying for an undergraduate programme include a senior high school graduation certificate and transcripts of their academic performance. They must also supply the scanned first pages of their passport. All international students’ passports must be valid, and all students must be in good health.

Postgraduate applicants will require more supporting documentation, as well as having achieved previous successful university qualifications to the level of at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject (or at least a master’s degree for doctoral courses). An international student applying for any postgraduate programme must share their academic transcripts and scanned passport pages, as above, along with a study plan for their time in China and a letter of recommendation.

Each individual course may have more specific university entry requirements. Students are advised to check the information pages for the course they wish to study on the JLU website before applying. Applicants should also note that some courses at JLU are taught in English and others are taught in Mandarin Chinese. Evidence of the relevant language ability will be required during the application process.

English Score Required

Some courses at JLU, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, are taught in English. Others are taught in Mandarin Chinese. Students can find out more about which courses are taught in which language via the international students’ catalogue.

For English-taught courses, international students will need to meet minimum English language requirements to be eligible for admission. Proof of proficiency can be shown through a number of testing methods, but two of the most common are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

General English language requirements usually ask for a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6 or a minimum TOEFL score of 70. Some courses have higher standards, like the clinical medicine MBBS programme, which asks for a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5 (with no individual band scores below 5).

International students can also choose to study one of the Chinese-taught programmes at JLU. Generally, an HSK Level Four score of at least 180 is enough to be eligible for admission. Again, this is higher for some courses, like undergraduate clinical medicine (where an HSK Level Five score of at least 180 is required).

Admission

JLU aims to make student admission as easy as possible for university applicants, including overseas applicants. Whether they’re applying at the undergraduate, postgraduate or non-degree level, international students need to feel comfortable about the admission process. JLU makes sure they do by keeping it simple and offering applicants a place to take all their questions and issues in the form of the International Student Admissions Office.

Applications should be submitted online via the International Student Service System. Applicants will need to fill in all their personal information and attach the relevant supporting documents when asked to. The full list of documents required is as follows:

  • A scan of their valid passport’s personal information page
  • Their high school diploma/the equivalent
  • Their academic transcripts
  • Proof of their English language proficiency/Mandarin Chinese language proficiency
  • Their Foreigner Physical Examination Form
  • Their certificate of deposit

If any transcripts or documents are not in Mandarin Chinese or English, a translation must also be provided. After an application is submitted and a non-refundable student admission application fee of RMB 600 is paid, there will be two reviews carried out by JLU (one by the College of International Education and one by the relevant teaching and training unit). An applicant will then learn if they’re being offered a place at JLU or not.

The average annual tuition fee for undergraduate students at JLU is RMB 22,000. For master’s and doctoral students, annual fees can range between RMB 21,000 and 35,000. Non-degree programmes, including the Chinese language and culture programme, have fees of around RMB 10,000. There are also various short-term courses available.

Scholarships & Funding

Jilin understands that for international students, studying in China can seem expensive. That’s why it offers many great scholarships and funding programmes to these students, helping them to cover the costs (and making settling into Chinese life easier). Some of the university scholarships at JLU are offered in partnership with the Chinese government.

The National Scholarship programme is a brilliant option. All international students can apply, no matter which level of qualification they’re studying toward. A National Scholarship covers the cost of tuition fees and the application fee. It’s delivered in instalments and allows students to have free on-campus accommodation, as well as full medical insurance. When an application for the National Scholarship programme is submitted, the following steps occur:

  1. The application is reviewed by the China Scholarship Council (CSC).
  2. The documents are sent to JLU for review.
  3. Once JLU approves the application/documents, students can study in China.
  4. Admission documents (student visa and admission letter) will be sent to successful students.
  5. Students who are successful must confirm (and not change) their study information and arrive in China by their study deadline.

Another popular option for postgraduates is the Chinese Government Scholarship. Like the National Scholarships, these cover tuition fees, on-campus accommodation costs, living costs and medical insurance. They are awarded to students who are academically gifted and achieve amazing results.

The Confucius Institute Scholarship is aimed at all international students who want to study and eventually teach Mandarin Chinese. It’s available to any students studying either a bachelor’s or master’s degree focused on teaching the language to speakers of other languages. Applicants must meet the HSK language requirements applicable in order to apply for this scholarship.

The Golden Bean International Student Scholarship is awarded to non-Chinese students who want to make a difference in their home countries after graduating. The College of International Education Scholarship is given to hard-working students from poor economic backgrounds as a form of valuable funding support.

University Structure

JLU is located in Changchun, one of the most important cities in North China. It has eight campuses spread across six districts and is home to over 40 colleges and schools. These colleges and schools are administratively organised into nine core faculties, which are:

Facilities

One thing that makes JLU stand out compared to other universities, both in China and across the world, is its excellent facilities. There are loads of academic and social opportunities for international and domestic students at JLU, and they’re invited to make the most of everything the university has to offer, in and out of the classroom.

Each lecture theatre and seminar room is modern and spacious. Most of the campuses have their own libraries for specific subjects, like the Medical Library at the Xinmin Campus, and each one is its own student activity centre for studies and research. In total, JLU libraries have over five million printed books and thousands of Chinese and foreign journals, so students can always access the information they need.

The International Students Association is a fantastic organisation for extracurriculars and student life. It aims to pair up international and domestic students so that they can become friends and experience university together. It also organises lots of events and activities to give everyone the chance to socialise and make connections.

There are lots of athletic opportunities at JLU for students who want to keep fit, including student recreation centres on campus and clubs focused on everything from table tennis to volleyball. The Sunlight Sports initiative is one of many great options at the university for any student wanting to stay fit and healthy during their studies.

There are also lots of great food and drink options on campus and in wider Changchun. Each one is a student life centre and a place for students to socialise between and after class. One of the most popular options is the Friendship Assembly Hall restaurant. There are also plenty of great accommodation options for international students and domestic students at JLU, offering safety and convenience.

Accommodation

Across its eight campuses, JLU has seven dormitories that international students can call home. In total, they contain 929 rooms, and thanks to the shared room options on offer, 1,671 beds. The types of accommodation, their cost and the facilities at each depend on the applicant’s student house of choice.

All rooms in JLU student accommodation halls come furnished. International students’ personal preferences and programmes are also considered when the university is arranging roommates, meaning that students can expect to share accommodation with people similar who have similar interests.

At the central campus, the university accommodation for international students is called the Youyi Guesthouse. Rent is charged per day. A small single room costs RMB 30 per day, while a shared double room costs RMB 25 per day. Each room includes bookshelves, a shoe rack and a TV, and shared facilities include the kitchen, the living room and various sporting fields and courts.

All accommodation sites organised by JLU off campus have great transport links to the campuses. Other accommodation options include Nanhu Guesthouse, located in one of the most beautiful parts of Changchun, and five student dormitory options:

  • Da Xue Cheng International Student Dormitory
  • North Campus Xinmin International Student Dormitory
  • North Campus Chaoyang International Student Dormitory
  • West Campus International Student Dormitory
  • Hexie Jiayuan International Student Dormitory

Student Support

The Student Affairs Office is the number one place for international students to go to when they need guidance and support across a range of different areas. It provides student guides on everything from visa applications to medical insurance and the best ways to experience student life in China. It offers student support services to help with everything from academic to personal issues. It offers graduation student support programmes and helps everyone understand and meet JLU’s regulations.

For example, physical exams must take place on the Chinese mainland, and all future students need to complete one. JLU helps students arrange their physical examinations and fill out the application forms so that all the boxes are correctly ticked before they start their studies. Other JLU student support services include employability-boosting volunteering opportunities through the iCare Volunteer Association.

Graduate Outcomes

JLU has some world-leading subject areas, including law and engineering, and the university’s reputation only grows with time. JLU graduates enjoy great job prospects and careers in Asia and across the world after graduation. The network of successful alumni is always growing, and employers are always happy to have professional, hard-working JLU graduates on their staff.

There are currently over 5,000 former students in Asia, over 900 graduates in North America, and over 3,000 in Europe. Many graduates are using the brilliant practical skills they gained during their degrees, proving that their education continues to be valuable after graduation. Current students benefit from employability-focused teaching and lots of great employment services.

In order to make the most of the university’s internships and career services, students need to apply for a two-five working visa. When they receive it, they can take part and enrol on various work programmes and activities. At this stage, they’ll be given a career guide that helps them learn how to approach employers effectively, and they’ll also get help figuring out their career options based on their studies.
