Over 30 professors in China are accredited to teach Centennial’s Ontario College Diploma and Graduate Certificate Programs at SCC. “What I think is critical for students to know is that Centennial College is making sure the faculty in Suzhou are teaching to Ontario College program standards, with Centennial’s values embedded. We control all learning outcomes, all grading and assessment criteria, and all decisions on academic quality in Suzhou…Centennial trains faculty at SCC in our student-centered educational philosophy to ensure they are prepared to deliver a curriculum that engages, inspires and transforms.” - Ann Buller, President and CEO, Centennial College.
The learning style at SCC encourages students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills. With guidance from SCC professors, students learn to combine these skills with career-focused technical and professional training, hands-on industry experience, and a global perspective. “The learning style at Suzhou Centennial is very different from our Chinese learning style. I like the teamwork. You can talk with many people from the international world, and meet a lot of international students. That’s why I chose this school, it lets me open up my mind” explains Belle Xinbei, Software Foundations Student.
Suzhou Centennial College is the jewel of Centennial College’s 22-year history of collaboration with Chinese higher education institutions, industry and government. Suzhou Centennial College received the Education Excellence Bronze Award from the Canada China Business Council (CCBC) in October 2018. This outstanding recognition is a milestone achievement for an institution only in its second year.
Suzhou Centennial College has attracted more than 1,500 full-time students from such diverse nations as China, South Korea, Panama, India, Côte d’Ivoire, Uzbekistan, and Sweden. Yet students and parents are not the only ones choosing Suzhou Centennial.
Centennial’s strong global linkages have prompted some creative exchanges. The governments of Panama and South Korea sponsor groups of students to pursue Mandarin education and practical training programs at SCC, promoting students’ employability and building national competences.
China’s important role in world trade makes gaining skills for doing business in China a smart career move. “I know that if I learn Mandarin maybe when I go back to Panama I will have a really good job, for example in some port because Panama has the Canal, one of the most important ways of traveling and transporting around the world, and China has relationships with everybody.” says Manuel Guerra, SCC student sponsored by The Institute for Training and Development of Human Resources (IFARHU).
The Suzhou learning site also offers Centennial College students in Toronto incredible new global experiences, like a Faculty-led International Program or a semester exchange in China.
SCC students can start their program in China and apply to complete their final year at Centennial College in Toronto, or complete their program in China and pursue articulated pathways to college and university programs in Canada.
Suzhou Centennial College programs equip graduates with industry skills required to launch successful careers and offer pathway options for students interested in pursuing further study in Canada.
SCC programs are linked to industry through a Chinese-foreign joint training model. Co-operation with industry, government and education partners ensures students gain employable skills that meet the needs of industry. Canada’s high academic standards and rigorous quality controls ensure the Canadian education programs at SCC are recognized globally and will benefit career goals of students over the long term.
SCC programs offer excellent opportunities to apply course credits towards further study in diploma and degree programs in Canada. After graduation, Centennial’s International Education Office in Suzhou assists students in applying for a study permit through the Canadian Embassy in China.
International students that studied English Language Learning, Foundations and Diploma Programs at the learning site in China have successfully continued their studies in Financial Services, Early Childhood Education, Electronics Engineering Technology, Software Engineering Technology and Business programs at Centennial College in Toronto, Canada.
With more than 1,000 pathway options, Centennial College is a leader in academic pathways and partnerships. Established articulation agreements include pathways to York University and University of Guelph-Humber in Ontario, Athabasca University in Alberta, as well as Vancouver Island University and Royal Roads University in British Columbia. Pathways are subject to meeting the admissions requirements of Centennial College and partner institutions with required grades.
Students can immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of the city, whilst developing industry skills and building global professional networks in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). SIP has attracted more than 4,900 foreign-invested enterprises, including 93 Fortune 500 multinational companies and more than 18,000 domestic companies. As a result, it is an ideal place for students to study at the heart of local industry and just a 30-minute journey from the huge global financial hub of Shanghai, accessible to SCC students via high-speed bullet train.
SCC is joined at the industrial park by a further 28 post-secondary institutions, creating a thriving student scene. The Suzhou Dushu Lake Higher Education Town is home to more than 100,000 students, all studying and living in the high-tech industrial park. “I participated in the province’s English speaking competition. During this two-day competition, I won the first prize for our school and for myself. Actually, it was my first ever competition and that was a very wonderful journey for me” shares Leon Nurxat – Business Foundations student at SCC.
Suzhou is known as the “Venice of the East”, with its enchanting waterways and stone bridges reflecting more than 2,500 years of history and drawing parallels with the famous Italian city. “The history is incredible here. Everything modern that you can think of is here also. Suzhou has the best of the ancient world and the best of the modern world. China is also a very safe country” says John Kubinski, Professor, Language Center.
“Suzhou is a good place to study software engineering because the Suzhou government is very supportive of the development of hi-tech infrastructure, cloud computing, and the latest artificial intelligence. There are many creative jobs in Suzhou! To the South of our campus there is a hi-tech park with hundreds of software companies,” explains Professor Tin, Chair, Department of Information Technology at Suzhou Centennial College.

Suzhou Centennial College (Suzhou, China)
Centennial College (Toronto, Canada)
The moment I reached China, everything changed for me. I never went abroad before, and the food and culture were so different. My background was in medical studies in India. Therefore, everything I have learned about finance is because of Suzhou.
The professors are so co-operative! With small class sizes, every student receives individual attention. I learned how imports and exports depend on the relationships between economies and markets.
Our teachers took us to museums and gardens to learn about Suzhou’s history and culture. I vividly remember seeing the bright red dress at a traditional Chinese wedding.
As I became familiar with new traditions, I noticed similarities as well as differences – I even started to love Chinese cuisine. I know from experience the government in China supports international students.
After my first semester, I was awarded a scholarship from Jiangsu Province for academic excellence. I also received a scholarship from Centennial College. Support in Suzhou was not only financial. The faculty and staff always encouraged us to do our best.
My experience abroad made me much more independent; now I know I can explore the whole world.
I am currently in the third semester of my program at Centennial College in Toronto, Canada, and my hard work in Suzhou is still paying off. I am getting 90s in advanced math because of everything I learned at SCC. Here I am in Toronto, already starting to miss Suzhou.
Centennial is the best college, in Suzhou or here in Canada – they have the same co-operative staff.
