What will I learn?

South Australia has a very strong electronics sector that specialises in the design and manufacture of defence, communication and instrumentation systems, sensors and medical devices. Designed in collaboration with industry, the course prepares you to become an Electronics Associate (technical officer). This course has full professional accreditation by Engineers Australia.

Course Notes

*If students do not have Year 12 maths or overseas equivalent, they may wish to undertake the Diploma of Electronics and Communication Engineering prior to this Associate Degree as a package. The Diploma will provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge in math’s to receive entry into the Associate Degree.

This qualification is accredited by Engineers Australia. This accredited qualification is recognized in Australia and some overseas countries. Graduates of this course are eligible for migration skills assessment by Engineers Australia. The occupational outcome of this assessment is in the Engineering Associate (Draftsperson) category. The specific occupation code depends on the program studied and on the Engineers Australia guidelines. See the Engineers Australia website for further details.

This course is offered in blended study mode. This means that you learn in a mixture of classroom and online environments. On campus learning will be scheduled but online learning can provide more flexibility. Lecturer support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.

The Associate Degree in Electronic Engineering will be taught 70% at Regency Campus and 30% at Tonsley Campus, and some classes may be held in the evening. More details will be provided upon commencement into the Associate Degree in Electronic Engineering.

As part of the Associate Degree program, TAFE SA will provide work experience and/or industry-based project opportunities. While optional, these activities, will give you first-hand experience of the workplace, allowing you to test your skills and make valuable industry contacts.

Employment Outcomes

Work as a technical officer in the rapidly-growing electronics industry and related areas like defense, mining, biomedical and communications. You may be working alongside engineers to design and prototype advanced technology, or customizing computer controlled video equipment in a television studio. Graduates often choose to further their career by completing a University degree.

Topics covered include engineering practice, mathematics, digital electronics, analogue electronics, computer science, communication systems, project management and microcontroller programming. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 17 units.

Minimum academic entry is completion of Year 12 or equivalent. IELTS Academic 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands; TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) – iBT: Score of 46, with reading: 4-7, listening: 4-6, speaking: 14-15, and writing: 14-17; Pearsons Test of English (PTE) Academic: Minimum 42 with 36 in all for communicative skills ((listening, reading, writing and speaking); Occupational English Test OET: Pass; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE), Cambridge First Certificate of English (FCE): Overall score of 162 with a minimum of 154 in all bands; Intensive English Language Institute (IELI): English for Academic Purposes 2 (C grade); GCE O Levels English/1119 English: C6.
