Our Bachelor of Fine Art has two specialisations which you select when you apply:
Bachelor of Fine Art (Single and Double Degrees)
Bachelor of Art History and Curating (Single and Double Degrees)
Bachelor of Fine Art
Our Bachelor of Fine Art specialisation is a studio-based degree with a strong focus on contemporary fine art. At Monash, the studio is a shared space for experimentation, collaboration and learning where you'll be introduced to a range of contemporary art practices and interdisciplinary methodologies.
You'll be encouraged to experiment across a range of mediums such as painting, photography, drawing, printmaking, glass, sculpture, jewellery, and digital fabrication, to cultivate and develop your experience with the language of these fine art materials, as we work with you to develop and refine your personal methodology and approach to creating and making art.
With purpose-built facilities, we connect you as young emerging artists with the resources, professional practice, expert industry knowledge, and a dynamic artist community, to ensure you are set up for success after you graduate.
Bachelor of Art History and Curating
Our Bachelor of Art History and Curating offers a dual specialisation in art history and theory and well as curatorial studies and practice. You'll be uniquely positioned to develop your understanding and appreciation of art including its origins and significance. In the practical components of this course, you'll be able to apply your knowledge to develop exhibition concepts for a range of cultural settings, including museums, galleries and site-specific exhibitions.
With both specialisations, you'll study, work and be part of the creative community at Caulfield campus where you'll have access to a range of on-campus galleries, such as MADA Gallery, the student-run Intermission Gallery where you can experiment and test out your art and exhibition ideas, and the nationally significant Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), where you'll engage with a broad range of artists, curators, exhibitions and the MUMA collection.
With both specialisations at the same campus, we facilitate a high degree of collaboration with opportunities for our curatorial and practising fine art students to work together, create exhibitions and develop broad multidisciplinary networks. In addition, you'll be able to do internship units to gain real world work experience to set you up for success after graduation.
You'll also have the opportunity to take an immersive study semester at the
Monash University Prato Centre, set in the heritage-listed Palazzo Vaj in the historic centre of Prato, Italy, as well as overseas travel to Asia where Monash also has a campus in Indonesia. Travelling with staff and fellow students in small groups, you'll follow a set curriculum working on industry projects and visiting partner institutions to enrich your learning experience.
