What will I learn?

There is an acute shortage of data scientists, with a recent McKinsey Global Institute report1 projecting a 50 per cent gap between demand and supply by 2018. Professionals with strong data management and analytic skills are in demand and projected to increase in the future.

This degree has been designed in consultation with industry including the Institute of Analytics Professionals of Australia and the leader in business analytics software – SAS.

Employers look for people who can hit the ground running. You’ll learn the same software and technology used in the industry, so you’ll be ready for the workplace when you graduate. During your studies, you’ll develop strong communication skills that will prepare you to present clear ideas and important business decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders across all levels of an organisation.

This degree is informed by research and leading-edge developments in the industry, as well as research being carried out through the Data to Decisions Cooperative Research Centre (CRC). University of South Australia is the national headquarters for the $88 million CRC in big data. The Data to Decisions CRC is set to boost national security and places University of South Australia at the forefront of industry and academic research collaboration.

What you'll learn

In this degree, you’ll learn the core concepts of IT and then go on to specialise in analytics. You’ll learn the latest tools and technology used by industry in big data analysis, statistics and project management.

You’ll learn to:

  • Perform data exploration using visualisation, statistical techniques and data mining techniques to identify relationships and opportunities
  • Perform predictive analytics on large data sets using an industry standard software tool set
  • Use the R language for statistical analysis of large and complex data sets
  • In the final year of your degree, you’ll work on authentic industry problems using real business scenarios.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Australian Year 12 program or an equivalent program in your home country. English language requirements: English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.0, TOEFL PBT: 550 with TWE of 4.5, TOEFL iBT: 60 with Reading and Writing not less than 18, Cambridge CAE/CPE: 169, CELUSA (UniSA ELICOS): AE4, Pearson PTE: 50 with Reading and Writing communicative scores not less than 50. Note: SAT is scored on a 1600 point scale.

For international students

Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria with a competitive result:
Higher education study: Successfully completed equivalent to a minimum of half a year of full-time study of a higher education program at a recognised higher education provider OR
Vocational Education and Training (VET): Complete an award from a registered training organisation at Certificate IV or above OR
Work and life experience: Passed a University of South Australia Online literacy and numeracy test and have relevant work experience, or Completed a University of South Australia Foundations Studies program or equivalent, or Qualify for Special Entry OR
Recent secondary education: Completed a secondary education qualification equivalent to SACE, such as an interstate year 12 or international qualification.
