Nuclear medicine technologists provide a clinical service within a multidisciplinary team. They are responsible for preparing and administering radioactive substances, called radiopharmaceuticals, in order to evaluate the function of an organ or body system and diagnose and treat disease. Using specialised equipment and computer systems they acquire patient images, analyse quantitative data and work closely with nuclear medicine physicians who interpret the images and data collected. The Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine) with Honours prepares you for a career as a nuclear medicine technologist. As a student and future professional you will need to demonstrate care and empathy for patients. Along with your technical skills, patient skills are developed through extensive clinical placement opportunities. As part of your studies you will also independently develop a research proposal, conduct a research project and write a thesis under the supervision of University of South Australia researchers.During your first year you will learn the sciences that underpin the study and practice of medical radiation. As you progress you will develop the professional skills needed to practice and apply them through clinical placements. Your final year includes a comprehensive clinical practice program with regular preclinical preparation workshops.
