What will I learn?

Melbourne Polytechnic's Certificate III in Hairdressing will give you the perfect mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills for an exciting career in hairstyling.

The course is also available as an apprenticeship.

A world of colour

You will learn to use a range of sales, consultation and technical skills and knowledge to provide a broad range of hairdressing services to clients such as:

  • Cutting
  • color
  • Design skills from short to long hair
  • Braiding
  • Chemical and keratin protein straightening
  • Manage appointment booking systems
  • Planning services for special events
  • Hair show Competitions/Presentations

You will gain the confidence and skills to use discretion and judgement to provide client services while learning how to coordinate a salon team and sell various products and services.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is competency based. Satisfactory completion of each learning outcome is required. Some competencies may be assessed through course work while others may be achieved through on-the-job training.

Entry requirements

For international students

Academic: Australian Year 11 equivalency or higher.

English: Academic IELTS 5.5 with no individual band below 5.0, Pearson PTE Academic 42 overall with no individual communicative skill below 36, or Melbourne Polytechnic recognized equivalency. TOEFL iBT: 49 overall (Writing: 18, Speaking: 16, Reading: 8, Listening: 7); Cambridge English Scale (Cambridge: First (FCE), Cambridge: Advanced (CAE), Cambridge: Proficiency (CPE)): 162 overall (individual bands: 154); Melbourne Polytechnic: ELICOS - 2+ ISLPR overall individual bands: min ISLPR 2.
