What will I learn?

The Department of Business Administration offers a PhD stream in Business Administration and Analytics that can be taken over 3 years full time (1 year extension available). High-achieving students can undertake research in one or more areas of specialisation. Here, under the supervision of internationally renowned researchers, our PhD students produce cutting-edge research, in preparation for placement in leading academic institutions and organisations worldwide. PhD candidates form an integral part of the Faculty of Business and Economics and are strongly encouraged to participate in its research and teaching activities. The working environment for graduate research students is first class, with excellent library and computing facilities.

The Doctoral Program in Business Administration and Analytics is typically undertaken for up to 4 years (full-time equivalent) or up to 8 years (part-time).

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants should have achieved an overall H2A (75-79%) grade in the relevant honours or masters degree to be eligible to apply. However, in recent years successful applications have required an H1 (80-100%) overall grade range. English language requirements: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.

For specialisations within Business Administration (accounting, economics, finance, management or marketing):

a two-year masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study with a minimum weighted average of 75% or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, as determined by the Assistant Dean (Graduate Research) of the Faculty of Business and Economics.

For specialisations within Business Analytics:

a four-year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% (80% for Economics) in the final year subjects or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, OR
a masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, OR
a qualification and professional experience considered to be equivalent.
