What will I learn?

The Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing is designed for registered nurses working in mental health settings. This course focuses on current clinical issues in mental health, as well as therapeutic skills and role development.

You will learn how to deal with a range of conditions across the variety of health care environments in which clients present with mental illnesses, mental disorders and psychological distress seeking specialist assessment and treatment. This programs provides registered nurses with the skills and attributes necessary to provide sophisticated, complex care to patients facing mental health conditions. It is designed for nurses who already have some experience of the mental health environment.

Completion of the Graduate Diploma program can be used as credit towards a Masters degree in the discipline or a pathway into the Master of Nursing.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

For international students

A successful applicant for admission to the Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing will hold

(a) a pre-registration nursing degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification; or

(b) an embedded graduate certificate in this discipline from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification.

In exceptional circumstances the dean may admit applicants without these qualifications who, in the opinion of the School, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.

International applicants are required to have a minimum of one year's experience in mental health nursing.
