What will I learn?

A faculty or the Board of the Graduate Research School may require students who have applied to undertake a higher degree by research course to complete a preliminary course to ensure that they possess the necessary knowledge and research skills to complete the proposed course successfully, in the context of maintaining the University's reputation as a university of the highest international standing.

This course is taught on a case-by-case basis, where the Faculty decides whether you must complete a preliminary course of study before becoming eligible for admission to a higher degree by research.

A higher degree by research preliminary is a supervised course of advanced study and/or research administered by a faculty to a value determined by the faculty or the Board of the Graduate Research School on the recommendation of the relevant head of school. A faculty or the Board of the Graduate Research School may, on the recommendation of the relevant head of school, require an applicant to complete a preliminary course before deciding whether or not to accept the applicant into a higher degree by research.

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree of this University or equivalent qualification. Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - minimum grade 58 (C); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - minimum grade 45 (C); PTE (Academic) - an overall score of 64 with a minimum score of 59 in the speaking and writing sections, and no less than 54 in the listening and reading sections. IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 (must include Academic Reading and Writing modules). Unless otherwise noted, requirements apply to individual scores for the communicative skills sections which include listening, reading, speaking and/or writing; TOEFL - Essay Rating / Test of Written English (TWE) of 4.5 and either 230 (Computer-based) or 570 (Paper-based) score or other English language test. TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT): An overall score of 82 with a minimum score of: 22 in the Writing section; 18 in the Reading section; 20 in the Speaking section; and 20 in the Listening.
