What will I learn?

The law forms the foundation on which civilised societies are based. In fact, it underpins many of society’s social, economic and scientific challenges. Having a knowledge of law will allow you to expertly respond to a range of individual, corporate, national and global problems.

This degree will prepare you for a range of careers in Australia and globally, as well as satisfy the educational requirements to become a legal practitioner. It continues Macquarie’s tradition of providing interdisciplinary and contextual perspectives on the study of law.

KEY FEATURES

  • You’ll learn about the law in its broader context, looking beyond law as a set of rules and procedures or as a technical qualification and, instead, as something that has the power to shape lives.
  • This degree is accredited with professional bodies regulating the admission of law graduates to legal practice and provides appropriate qualification for admission to practice as a lawyer throughout Australia.
  • You can choose to study on campus or online, where you’ll learn from academics with practical experience as legal practitioners and who are actively engaged in research on contemporary legal issues.
  • The interdisciplinary approach of this degree has earned our graduates a reputation for being well-rounded professionals with highly capable legal minds, who also have a realistic understanding of the world, its people and the issues that bind them together.
  • You’ll have the opportunity to undertake internships and work placements in a range of legal settings in Australia and overseas through our unique law PACE (Professional and Community Engagement) program.
  • Our small class sizes and dedicated postgraduate classes ensure you’re well supported to achieve throughout the degree and beyond graduation.
  • As a graduate, you’ll join distinguished alumni who include some of Australia’s leading judges, managing partners of national law firms, diplomats, members of parliament and senior executives in the private sector.

ACCREDITATION

The Juris Doctor is accredited with professional bodies regulating the admission of law graduates to legal practice and provides appropriate qualification for admission to practice as a lawyer throughout Australia.

In addition to completing a law program at an accredited institution, the profession requires all graduates to complete a period of legal training including further study, continuing professional development units and supervised experience in a legal practice, before being admitted to practice as a barrister or solicitor.

To be qualified as an Australian Legal Practitioner in NSW, a solicitor or barrister also requires a Practising Certificate issued by the Councils of the Law Society of New South Wales or the New South Wales Bar Association respectively. Similar bodies and systems of accreditation exist in the other states.

SUITABLE FOR

Those wanting to enter the legal profession or develop a broad, comprehensive understanding of the Australian legal system.
