What will I learn?

The Master’s by research degree requires you to deepen your knowledge of your discipline area and develop advanced skills in the conduct of independent and sustained research.

As a Master's by research candidate, you will undertake a supervised research project that culminates in the submission of a thesis for examination. Upon completion of your candidature you must demonstrate through your thesis that you have acquired an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in one or more disciplines. A Master's by research degree may also serve as an entry into a PhD. A Master's by research candidate is eligible to apply for entry into a PhD if they meet the individual entry requirements of the particular degree and have completed their degree.

The following conditions must be met in order to gain admission into a Master's by research degree:

  • you must meet the minimum entry requirements for the degree as outlined below
  • the department or school in which you seek enrolment must be able to provide appropriate facilities, resources and supervision for your chosen area of research.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 – Masters Degree by Research.

This degree will allow you to pursue a career in academic research, higher education, industry, and the community sectors, and can open up more opportunities for further study in a more specialised field. It can also serve as a pathway into a PhD.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have an an Australian Bachelor's degree or an approved international equivalent qualification. IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0, TOEFL Internet based (iBT): overall score of 79 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing. Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): overall score of 58 with no communicative skill score less than 50. C1 Advanced: 176 with no less than 169 in any component. C2 Proficiency: 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

For international students

The minimum academic requirement for entry to a Masters by research at La Trobe is a three year Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline completed within the last ten years with a weighted average mark in the final year of 65 or above.

The coursework specialisations require a cognate undergraduate degree, may require higher academic requirements for entry or may specify how applicants may otherwise demonstrate their equivalence to the academic entry requirements with the approval of the Board of Graduate Research.

Entry in to the Research specialisation will require applicants to demonstrate equivalence of the advanced knowledge and research training that is required for completion of a research thesis only.

The minimum academic requirement for transfer to Master of Arts from a Bachelor (Honours) is a weighted average mark of 65 or above in the final year of that course.

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0
