What will I learn?

La Trobe's Master of Chemical Sciences gives you advanced training in key chemistry fields such as analytical, computational, medicinal, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. Advanced chemistry

Complete core subjects in advanced chemistry including environmental, medicinal, organic, inorganic, polymer chemistry and more.

Chemical structure and characterisation

Build on your understanding of techniques for the study of chemical compounds.
Receive advanced training in spectroscopic methods such as NMR and UV-visible spectroscopy, separation science and chromatography.

Scientific communication skills

Understand how to make your findings coherent and intelligible through report writing and data visualisation.
Learn to access scientific information using scientific journals, databases and online resources.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9.

Industrial chemist

  • Use your knowledge to provide technical support in an industrial setting.

Professional recognition

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent). WAM - Weighted Average Mark (WAM) 60%.

For international students

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).

Specialisation - compulsory: Chemistry

Applicants who hold a Bachelor degree with substantial chemistry content equivalent to second or third-year chemistry may also be considered.

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0

TOEFL Internet based (iBT): overall score of 79 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing.

Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): overall score of 58 with no communicative skill score less than 50.

C1 Advanced: 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

C2 Proficiency: 176 with no less than 169 in any component.
