Research School of Biology has over 60 Group Leaders offering HDR projects in areas covering a wide range of biology, and our graduates hold important positions in academia, industry and government agencies throughout the world. All HDR students in the School have, in addition to a primary supervisor, an expert supervisory panel that provides them with support and advice throughout their degree.

critically analyse, synthesise and evaluate information in a specific area of the discipline relevant to their research; formulate a research plan and undertake independent research to address specific research questions that make a substantial contribution to knowledge; ensure that research is carried out with integrity and actively promote responsible conduct of research; implement research methodologies relevant to their research questions; demonstrate technical and/or specialist skills relevant to their research focus; communicate effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences in both written and oral form; demonstrate appropriate collegial and professional behaviour, and safe working practices as required by their specific research focus.

Entry requirements

For international students

To be admitted to the Master of Philosophy program you will be required to have completed a relevant degree with H1 (first class) or H2A (upper second class) Honours. You may be granted admission if you can demonstrate equivalent qualifications.

Academic IELTS overall score of 6.5 with at least 6 in each component of the test; TOEFL internet based test score of 80, with a minimum of 20 in Reading and Writing and 18 in Speaking and Listening; TOEFL paper based test score of 570 with TWE score of 4.5; Cambridge CAE Advanced score of 176 overall with at least 169 in all sub skills; PTE Academic score of Overall 64, minimum score of 55 in each section.
