Confederation College’s Instrumentation Engineering and Control Technician – Process Automation and Control two-year program will provide you with a solid footing in both theory and practice in a modern, cutting-edge laboratory designed to emulate common control systems found in industry. Through coursework, you’ll learn the basics of electrical, digital, electronics, computer systems, industrial drawings & specifications, physics, computer software and communications for technology. Our lab features functioning processes employing pneumatic as well as modern microprocessor-based electronic control equipment such as PLC’s, Distributed Control Systems, and field networks.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

comply with current health and safety legislation and regulations, as well as organizational practices and procedures.

select, install, calibrate and troubleshoot equipment used in the measurement and control of process parameters.

select and install components to conform to instrumentation and process control system specifications and related safety requirements.

operate and configure electronic and computer-based controllers to optimize the performance of process control systems.

repair and maintain wireless and wired control system components applying basic electrical, electronic and digital principles to the operating systems and firmware.

assist with the installation of a control system as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

work in compliance with relevant industry standards, codes, policies and procedures.

prepare documentation, technical reports and drawings for instrumentation and process control systems that conform to industry standards.

develop strategies for ongoing professional development to enhance work performance as an instrumentation and control engineering technician.

Employment Opportunities

Instrumentation engineering technicians commission, install, calibrate, maintain and repair complex measurement and control systems used in a variety of process control applications. Opportunities exist in the pulp and paper, mining, chemical, petroleum, steel and manufacturing industries; fresh water and waste water management; grain trade; nuclear and thermal generation; biomedical equipment manufacturers; and sales and technical service of instrumentation equipment.
