What will I learn?

Centennial College's two-year Mechanical Engineering Technician – Design program combines strong conceptual thinking with a practical knowledge of machines and how they work. You learn engineering theory and develop computer-assisted drafting and computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM) skills.

The courses in this engineering diploma program employ a project-based approach to learning. This includes working in small groups on specific projects, learning how to plan, schedule, create, design and build as a team.

You have the choice of continuing into a third-year technology option and specializing in modern manufacturing and production processes.

The field of mechanical engineering technicians requires a combination of strong conceptual thinking with practical knowledge of machines and how they work. Our Mechanical Engineering Technician - Design (Fast-track) program is geared towards offering this know-how to qualified college or university graduates in one year (two semesters) as they gain direct admission into year two (Semester 3) of the two-year program.

Qualified graduates may be eligible to participate in pathway programs with partnering institutions. These pathway programs allow you to receive degree credit for learning obtained at Centennial College.

  • In the Mechanical Engineering Technician – Design program you gain experience in machine shop operation, tool design and computer numerical control programming.
  • Industry-current computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software instruction as AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks and Mastercam is included.
  • This program uses state-of-the-art CAD/CAM equipment.
  • There is a 60-40 balance between theory and practice.
  • The project-driven program gives you practical experience in designing, building and testing an original piece of equipment.

Accreditation

The Mechanical Engineering Technician - Design program has met the national technology accreditation requirements established by the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists (CCTT) and, as such, has received national accreditation status by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board (CTAB).

Entry requirements

Academic Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or mature student status (19 years or older)
  • English Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent (minimum grade required) or take the Centennial College English Skills Assessment for Admission
  • Mathematics Grade 11 M or U, or 12 C or U, or equivalent (minimum grade required) or take a Centennial College Engineering Math Skills Assessment for Admission.

English Language Requirements:

  • A TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 80+ (internet based with no test below 20)
  • IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0+ (with no single test score below 5.5)
  • CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment) with an overall band score of 60
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) score of 51 plus
  • ITEP (International Test of English Proficiency) score of 3.7 plus.
