What will I learn?

The offered PhD programs are: a standard PhD in Computing Science and a program leading to a PhD in Computing Science with specialization in Statistical Machine Learning.

Program Requirements

Students are required to complete ★12 in coursework and a thesis.

Coursework (★12)

Courses are to be chosen in consultation with an advisor/supervisor and approved by the Associate Chair (Graduate)

Three ★3 graduate-level courses. This may include one ★3 Special Topics course (CMPUT 605)
CMPUT 603 (★3)- Teaching and Research Methods


Registration required in 900-level THES. The major part of the student’s program will consist of original research that will culminate in a doctoral dissertation.

Candidacy Exam

Students are required to write a candidacy document and take a candidacy oral examination. Students must demonstrate that they have adequate knowledge of the discipline and subject matter relevant to the thesis topic and the ability to pursue and complete original research at an advanced level.


PhD students are required to present three publicly-announced Departmental seminars.

Academic Standing Requirement

PhD students are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3 in three graduate courses (excluding CMPUT 603) with no grade lower than B-.

Residence Requirement

The minimum period of residence is two academic years of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of Program

Students are encourage to finish their PhD program within 5 years.

The maximum time to complete the PhD program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The Faculty's minimum admission requirements for the master's thesis and course-based programs are a four year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, in physical education, kinesiology, recreation or another related degree, with a minimum admission grade point average of 3.0 on most 4.0 grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on the most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent).

For international students

Applicants are normally required to have completed a master’s degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.

An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.

English Language Proficiency:

  • a minimum TOEFL score of 100 with a minimum score of 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based), or equivalent
  • a minimum of 6.0 on each band on the IELTS with an overall minimum score of 7.0,
  • a minimum overall score of 70 on the CAEL with at least 60 on each subtest
  • a minimum overall score of 68 on the PTE.
