What will I learn?

The PhD program requirements include coursework, completion of an approved research project, and preparation of a thesis. For students entering the PhD program after a BSc degree, a minimum of 12 graded graduate level courses is required. For students entering the PhD program after a MSc degree, a minimum of 6 of graded graduate level courses is required. Students must also make one or more presentations specified by the Department and attend specified seminars.

Students must maintain a cumulative program GPA of 3.0.

Program Requirements

Degree of PhD in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (General Program)

Students must complete the required 12 or 6 graded graduate level courses in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (LABMP) or approved courses in other departments. LABMP 530, normally taken in the first year, is mandatory.

Degree of PhD with Specialization in Analytical and Environmental Toxicology

Students must complete the required 12 or 6 graded graduate level courses in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (LABMP) or approved courses in other departments. LABMP 530, normally taken in the first year, and LABMP 550 are mandatory. It is recommended that all students also complete LABMP 551.

Degree of PhD with Specialization in Bio preservation

Students must complete the required 12 or 6 graded graduate level courses in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (LABMP) or approved courses in other departments. LABMP 530, normally taken in the first year, and LABMP 510 are mandatory. It is recommended that all students also complete LABMP 511.

Degree of PhD with Specialization in Molecular Pathology

Students must complete the required 12 or 6 graded graduate level courses in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (LABMP) or approved courses in other departments. LABMP 530, normally taken in the first year, and LABMP 581 is mandatory. It is recommended that all students also complete LABMP 500.

Length of Program

For the PhD, the minimum program length is three years, and a maximum length is six years, depending on the research undertaken.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants are normally required to have completed a master’s degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta. An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent) is required. English Language Requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Minimum score of 550 (paper-based), or a total score of 88 with a score of at least 20 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based); Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) - Minimum score of 85; International English Language Testing System (IELTS); Minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least 5.5 on each band (Academic); Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) - Overall minimum score of 60, with at least 60 on each subtest; Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Overall minimum score of 59.

For international students

For students entering the PhD program after a BSc degree, a minimum of ★12 graded graduate level courses is required. For students entering the PhD program after a MSc degree, a minimum of ★6 of graded graduate level courses is required. Students must maintain a cumulative program GPA of 3.0.

English language requirement:

  • A minimum TOEFL score of 95 (internet-based) with a minimum score of 21 on each of the individual skill areas, or equivalent.
  • IELTS: 6.5, with at least 6.0.
  • PTE Academic: 61 with a minimum band score of 60.

The application deadlines: May 15 for September admission, September 15 for January admission, January 15 for May admission, March 15 for July admission.
