Housed in a historic building located at the main Halifax campus, the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science features newly renovated research laboratories containing a wide range of highly specialized, state-of-the-art instrumentation.

Our master's students conduct outstanding research in every area of physics, with guidance from faculty members, post-doctoral workers, undergraduate students and technical support staff.

First year:

  • Carry out research
  • Take and pass two or three graduate-level courses
  • Serve as a teaching assistant (TA) for undergraduate courses
  • Meet with a supervisor and supervisory committee before the year’s end

Second year:

  • Continue research
  • Finish coursework
  • Serve as a teaching assistant (TA) for undergraduate courses
  • Submit PhD Qualifying Report and pass an oral examination
  • Deliver a departmental seminar on a topic unrelated to your research
  • Meet with a supervisor and supervisory committee before the year’s end

Third year:

  • Continue your research
  • Finish course requirements
  • Serve as a teaching assistant (TA) for undergraduate courses
  • Meet with a supervisor and supervisory committee before the year’s end

Fourth year:

  • Continue and complete research
  • Deliver a departmental seminar on your research
  • Submit a PhD thesis and pass the oral examination.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have a first-class thesis master’s degree or its equivalent; Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study; Degree granted by university of recognized standing; Most candidates for admission to a doctoral program possess a Master's Degree. Direct entry to some programs is possible for those with exceptional academic standing. English language requirement: Internet-based TOEFL (Academic iBT): 92; MELAB: 85; IELTS: 7; CanTest: 4.5 (with no band score lower than 4.0); CAEL: 70 with no band score lower than 60; Pearson English Test PTE Academic: overall score of 65 and nothing below 54.

For international students

The application deadline for September admission is April 1, January admission is August 31 and May admission is December 31.
