What will I learn?

In our research-focused PhD degree program, you’ll pursue one of four concentrations:

Physics
Physics with a concentration in astronomy
Physics with a concentration in medical physics
Physics with a concentration in ocean physics

Whichever concentration you choose, you’ll work within a community whose research covers a diverse spectrum of areas. You’ll work on a dissertation that will reshape our understanding of the universe. You will also complete supplemental coursework and a candidacy exam.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Completion of an acceptable master’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by UVic; Any requirements specific to your program of study; TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): We require a minimum score of 90 from the internet-based TOEFL (IBT). You must also score at least 20 points each in the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections; IELTS (International English Language Testing System): We require minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS. No individual component can have a score lower than 6.0.

For international students

You must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy or a related field

MET (Michigan English Test): A score of 64 on the MET will be accepted as proof of English proficiency.

Application deadlines

September entry

Most students start their programs in September. We encourage you to apply for September entry. The deadline is December 1 of the previous year.

January and May entry

We may consider applicants for January or May entry in exceptional circumstances. You should submit your application for these entry points at least two months before the start of the term.
