What will I learn?

The Project Management program will allow you to further your career goals by gaining the in-depth knowledge, competencies, skills, tools, and techniques required to plan and execute projects that achieve organizational goals on time and on budget. This one-year graduate certificate is designed for university and college graduates looking for a career in the project management sector. The program also addresses emerging trends in project management through courses in Agile project management, recovery, risk, quality and leadership. Available 100% online or in a traditional in-class format with a September, January and May admission.

Upon completion of the first semester of the program, you'll be eligible for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification, an entry-level designation offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). As well, you'll be prepared to pursue PMI's Project Management Professional (PMP)designation after completing the prescribed period of professional project management experience.

Career Opportunities

Graduates can expect to find employment in large and small organizations, in the public and private sectors and in a variety of fields (e.g., information technology, construction, transportation, education, manufacturing, healthcare). They will be prepared for various project management roles, from entry-level to senior management, depending on their prior education and work experience: project assistant, project management assistant, project coordinator, project manager, project management specialist, project scheduler, project accountant, project administrator, project supervisor, project management consultant, project analyst and project engineer.

Project Management is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program, completed in two four-month levels (laptop required). Students will gain the in-depth knowledge, competencies, skills, tools, and techniques required to plan and execute major projects that achieve organizational goals on time and on budget. The Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge is an integral part of the program curriculum. The curriculum also addresses emerging trends in project management through courses in Agile Project Management, Project Recovery and Project Leadership. Upon completion of the first level of the program, students will be eligible for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification, an entry-level designation offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Graduates will be prepared to pursue PMI's Project Management Professional (PMP) designation after completing the prescribed period of professional project management experience.

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

1. Manage the scope, cost and schedule with focus on project success as defined by approved stakeholder requirements.

2. Describe other imperatives such as quality, risk and stakeholder satisfaction.

3. Analyze the various quality assurance techniques and controls.

4. Analyze traditional management and leadership techniques used in project management roles.

5. Demonstrate a working knowledge of a project management computer software specific to the practices of project management.

6. Identify the principles and models used for managing the project financials for resources, materials and the project schedule.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Student must have: A Two- or Three-Year College Diploma, or a Degree or Acceptable combination of related work experience and post-secondary education as judged by the College to be equivalent to the above. English Language Requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 88 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.5 with no score less than 6.0 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years. Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 59, with test results within the last two years.

For international students

Post-secondary diploma, advanced diploma or degree with a minimum overall average of “C+” (2.5 cumulative GPA) OR a combination of postsecondary education and work experience in a related field as judged by the College OR five years of work experience in project management field as judged by the College. In some cases a resume and cover letter may be requested.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 570 for the paper-based test (PBT), or 88 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test with an overall score of 6.5 with no score less than 6.0 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years

Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 70 with no score less than 60 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 59, with test results within the last two years

A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 176 with no language skill less than 169, with test results within the last two years

An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 75% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years

Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9 or 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10
