Part of the prestigious School of Graduate Studies at Trent University, the Big Data Analytics M.Sc. is a new stream in the program of Applied Modelling and Quantitative Methods.

The Big Data Analytics Stream is a Master’s of Science degree focusing on the rapidly growing field of data science. A professional program that can be completed in as little as 12 months, this exciting new stream prepares graduates with the tools and techniques they need to work with, and understand big data.

The field of data science is an evolving one, requiring skills from application domains, mathematics and computer science. Studies in this program focus on:

Requirements:

Three courses from the following selection: Foundations of Modelling, Statistical Aspects of Modelling, Mathematical Aspects of Modelling, Computational Aspects of Modelling, Introduction to Data Analytics with R.
Four courses from the following selection: Data Visualization, High Performance Computing, Data Mining, Introduction to Databases, Big Data.
Completion of a research paper.
Seminar presentation.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have completed a B.Sc. honours (a four-year undergraduate bachelors) degree; Minimum B+ (77%) or equivalent in the work of the last four semesters or the last two undergraduate years (last ten full credits). English Language Proficiency Tests: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). A minimum score of 580 PBT, or 93 IBT (with a minimum score of 22 in both speaking and writing); IELTS (International English language Testing Services) - The minimum acceptance score is 6.5, with no band below 6.0. CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Test) - The minimum acceptable score is 60, with at least 60 in writing Proficiency.

For international students

B.A. or B.Sc. honours degree (a four year undergraduate bachelor's degree) in one of the traditional disciplines: Anthropology, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computing & Information Systems, Economics, Geography, Humanities, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, Philosophy, or Psychology
Minimum B+ (77%) or equivalent in the work of the last four semesters or the last two undergraduate years (last ten full credits)
A university course in differential and integral calculus, and one in probability and statistics or the equivalent
Some familiarity with linear algebra, and be capable of programming at an elementary level in at least one computational language
A course in either differential equations or advanced statistics is required, depending on whether the student’s area of research will be mathematics or statistics based

The following tests are acceptable forms of proof of English language proficiency:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) A minimum score of 580 PBT, 237 CBT with a minimum TWE score of 4.5 or 93 iBT with a minimum score of 22 in both speaking and writing is required.; (Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey 08540, U.S.A.)
CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Test) – alternate test only for applicants who do not have access to TOEFL (Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1S 5B6). The minimum acceptable score is 60, with at least 60 in Writing Proficiency.
MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery). The minimum acceptable score is 85, with no part below 80.
IELTS Academic (International English language Testing Services). The minimum acceptance score is 6.5, with no band below 6.0.
