The UVic School of Music offers a unique, two-year experience to prepare you for a variety of musical professions, from performance and music technology to research scholarship and arts administration. We provide exceptional training, custom-tailored projects, performance opportunities and research expertise to help you with your studies.

We provide the tools you need to build a career in music. Our alumni include professional performers, composers, academics, arts administrators, and technological innovators. Music is a diverse field, and UVic has the resources to help you shape your own path.

Our performance program blends experience and education in a collaborative environment. Students receive individual lessons and coachings. You’ll receive personalized training in solo, chamber, and large ensemble settings. This program also includes seminar classes on music theory, history, and style.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants are required to hold a BSc in Biochemistry, Microbiology or an acceptable equivalent before final acceptance can be granted. Priority is given to students with a grade point average (GPA) of 77% or above (B+ average, 3.65 on a 4 point scale, high Second Class in Britain); however, the department will consider applications from students who have a minimum GPA of 73% (B average) if they have a demonstrated record of research accomplishment. English language requirement: A minimum TOEFL exam score of 100 (on the internet based exam) or an overall IELTS score of 7.0 with no score of less than 6.5 on each academic component is required.

For international students

Applicants must have completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by UVic. Equivalent of a minimum “B” average over the last two years of your degree. Any requirements specific to your program of study.

English language requirement:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 90 from the internet-based TOEFL (IBT). You must also score at least 20 points each in the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS. No individual component can have a score lower than 6.0. We will only accept results from the Academic IELTS.

MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): A score of 90 on the MELAB will be accepted as proof of English proficiency.

Deadline: International students: apply by December 15 for September entry.
