What will I learn?

The Department is engaged in a broad range of research in pure and applied mathematics and statistics, and offers programs leading to the MSc, and PhD degrees in mathematics or statistics. The MSc Degrees normally requires two years of study, and students may chose either a course-based option or a thesis option for the research component of the degree. The PhD program is an advanced, research-oriented course of study for which an original contribution to knowledge in the form of a dissertation is to be written and defended. The PhD program involves course work, comprehensive examinations, seminars, original research, and the defence of the dissertation.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

A graduating average of at least 70 per cent from a four-year baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) is required for admission to all programs. English Language Requirements: CAEL: 70; TOEFL iBT: 20 each band; IELTS: 6.5 overall, 6.0 each; PTE: 59; CanTEST: 4.5 overall, 4.0 each; MELAB: 80; TOEFL(paper, new): 20, 20, 20; UofR ESL: Advanced EAP 050.

For international students

The entrance requirement for the MSc program is a BSc degree in statistics, with a grade average of at least 75%.

English language requirement:

TOEFL (iBT): 20 each band

IELTS – Academic: 6.5 overall, 6.0 each

Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 59


For Fall admission:
January 31 with consideration for financial support
For Winter admission:
