What will I learn?

The Doctor of Philosophy is primarily a research degree. A program of study is designed for each student to ensure competence in a field of research, culminating in the writing of a thesis.

Applicants may enter the PhD program via one of two routes: 1) following completion of an appropriate master’s degree or 2) direct entry after completing a bachelor’s degree.

Anthropology is concerned with the unity and diversity of humanity (and related primates) and of human culture and society from a comparative and global perspective.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students must have minimum GPA: 3/4; B Plus GPA: 3.3/4. Exceptional applicants with a BSc degree may be accepted by direct entry into the PhD program, with a grade point average equivalent to a University of Toronto A– or better in the final year of the BSc. English language requirements: International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component. Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Including Writing and Speaking Sections: Overall score: 93; Writing: 22; Speaking: 22. Academic English Level 60: Required score: B. Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Online: Required score: 70 minimum total with at least 60 in each part. The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE): Required score: 76 minimum total with at least 22 in each component and 32 in writing. Cambridge Assessment English: Required score: minimum 185 overall with at least 176 in each component.

For international students

Admission is offered primarily to excellent students who, by the time of enrolment, have completed a master’s degree in anthropology (or a cognate subject).

All applicants are expected to have achieved grades averaging the equivalent of a University of Toronto A- or better in their last full year of study. Most successful applicants will have finished or be in the process of completing an MA or MSc.
