Program Overview

The Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering provides opportunities for advanced studies and research in the Earth Sciences. Faculty interests span disciplines in geology, geochemistry and geoengineering often in a multi-disciplinary fashion and including applications to economic and environmental problems.

Opportunities

With high-tech geochemistry and geophysics labs, geomechanics computing tools, and Queen’s Facility for Isotope Research lab to work in, our students have the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge geoscience and geoengineering research. As well, students collaborate with industrial partners, government laboratories and surveys, and academic institutions worldwide, and engage in extensive fieldwork on six continents, making our program truly a world-class experience. Students can avail opportunities to collaborate with other departments at Queen’s, including the GeoEngineering Centre at Queen’s & RMC, Mining, Environmental Studies, and Civil Engineering.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants must have degrees in Geological Sciences or Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering or Civil Engineering are acceptable. Degrees in related fields such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Sciences or Geography are seriously considered, however students will be required to take additional Geology courses. We consider your work over the last 4 years with emphasis on the last 2 years of schooling.

English language requirements

Applicants must have TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT): The minimum overall score is 88, made up of the minimum scores in each component test as follows: Writing test: 24/30; Speaking test: 22/30; Reading test: 22/30; Listening test: 20/30; MELAB: 80 (minimum overall score); IELTS: 7 (minimum score, academic module); PTE Academic: 65 (minimum overall score).
