What will I learn?

Gain in-demand English teaching skills from a globally renowned American university. Our master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), taught in Shanghai and New York City, prepares you to become an expert English teacher for children and adolescents. You’ll meet the national need for educators with master’s degrees while advancing your teaching skills in a variety of settings.

This two-year program enables you to take your courses on the New York University Shanghai campus and online, and to complete a summer immersion in New York City. You’ll receive a top-ranked, internationally respected degree from New York University, recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

We also offer a non-certification TESOL master's degree in New York City, as well as Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Education programs, all tailored for educators who work with adult learners in the US and around the world.

What You’ll Learn

Your course work will help you:

Improve your proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English
Develop your skills in all three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational
Combine your teaching and English language skills to develop effective curricula for students in kindergarten through high school
Integrate current language acquisition theories and best practices in teaching a second language
Expand your repertoire of English teaching methodology, tailored for your local needs
Gain deeper knowledge of second and foreign language research and learn to conduct your own classroom research to continuously improve your teaching
Enhance your linguistic and sociolinguistic knowledge of English structures and varieties, and the complexity of English language usage globally
Learn to navigate multiple cultures by investigating the links that connect language, culture, and identity
Become familiar with American education practices through school visits during your time in New York City

How You’ll Learn

Our program is taught in English and grounded in cutting-edge pedagogical methods from the US. You’ll learn from American-trained NYU Steinhardt faculty who have expertise in second and foreign language acquisition research and methodology and specific experience working with Chinese students.

You’ll experience your coursework in three ways:

Five on-site, in-person courses in Shanghai, typically in the evenings and on Saturdays during the Fall and Spring terms, and at varying times during the Summer immersion
Three online courses using NYU Classes, our specially designed online learning platform for synchronous and asynchronous learning
Two on-site, in-person courses in New York City, taught over six weeks in a summer immersion that explores the cultural landscape of the city and lets you observe in selected schools
