What will I learn?

The Doctoral Programme in Science is a multidisciplinary programme with a unique combination of science, technology and business. The research done is committed to high standards of international excellence and the aim is to educate doctoral candidates in different research fields to tackle increasingly complex societal challenges in areas such as energy, environment, health and well-being. The doctoral programme offers a four-year doctoral programme in physics, mathematics, biomedical engineering, computer science or industrial engineering and management.

Objectives of studies

Doctoral candidates will be equipped with the professional skills and knowledge required for demanding academic research and teaching positions. They will be trained for management, research and development, and other specialist positions of the information society. The departments, which are in charge of the doctoral programme’s education and research at the School of Science, offer research fields that are based on strong research traditions and research at the highest international level. Departments of the School of Science have been designated Centres of Excellence in Research by the Academy of Finland. The School of Science is also very active in various national and international doctoral education networks.

Structure of degree

The Doctor of Science (Technology) degree consists of an approved doctoral thesis and theoretical studies (40 ECTS), comprising two modules: scientific principles and practices (5–20 ECTS) as well as research field studies (20–35 ECTS). The completion of a doctoral degree equals four years of full-time studies.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have completed: an applicable higher university degree; an applicable higher polytechnic degree; an applicable education completed abroad which in the awarding country gives eligibility for corresponding higher education.

For international students

Eligible students must have completed:

  • a relevant master’s degree awarded by a Finnish university;
  • a relevant master’s degree awarded by a Finnish university of applied sciences; or
  • a relevant study programme abroad which in the awarding country confers eligibility for the corresponding level of higher education.

Accepted language tests in English and their minimum score requirements are (Aalto University Admissions Criteria 2020):

  1. IELTS (Academic): 6.5, and 5.5 for Writing;
  2. TOEFL:
    • IBT (Internet-based Test): 92, and 22 for the Writing section or
    • PDT (Paper-Delivered Test): Reading 22, Listening 22, and Writing 24
  3. C1 Advanced, prev. Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: A,B or C
  4. C2 Proficiency, prev. Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: A,B,C or Level C1
  5. Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE A): 62, and 54 for writing
