What will I learn?

The Master’s Degree Programme (MDP) in Biomedical Technology is intended for students with a Bachelor’s degree in biological, computational or mathematical sciences who want to attain in-depth knowledge and hands-on skills in the crossroads of molecular biology, cell technology and bioinformatics with the focus on human health. The programme is open for applications from both Finnish and international applicants.

Biomedical technology is a multi-disciplinary field that builds on molecule-level understanding of biological systems with a goal to develop new approaches to advance medical and biotechnological applications. The Master’s Degree Programme in Biomedical Technology at the University of Tampere provides multi-disciplinary education that combines natural sciences with technology with a specific focus on methods that have potential to advance human health. The programme brings together the expertise and methods in a large spectrum of natural, medical, and engineering sciences, including biology, chemistry, medicine, genetics as well as statistics, computational and data sciences. There are three options for specialization: molecular biology, cell technology, and bioinformatics.

Study objectives

The aim of the education is to equip students with capabilities for expert tasks in the various fields of application of biotechnology (research, teaching, administration, product development, marketing) in both the public and private sectors, at home and abroad. The education implements a multidisciplinary approach. Multiform teaching methods support the achievement of the content objectives of the degrees. Students will also have an opportunity to pursue part of their studies abroad at co-operation universities.

On completion of the Master’s degree students will have

  • The capability to apply scientific knowledge in the field of biosciences
  • Good written and oral communication skills and ability for multidisciplinary scientific interaction

Career Opportunities

The program equips students with the essential skills needed for working in the field of biomedical technology, such as project work and management skills and ability to work in a laboratory. Our graduates have found work as academic specialists working in research or teaching, or in the field of product development, both in Finland and abroad. Some also work in sales and marketing in biomedical companies or are employed by research institutes or research funding organizations.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

If you have completed or are completing your degree in the USA, an official transcript of records must be submitted to University Admissions Finland by the awarding institution. The envelope must be sealed by the awarding institution’s official stamp across the back flap. The transcript of records must come to University Admissions Finland directly from the awarding institution and cannot be sent by the applicant. It is acceptable if the envelope contains other official documents awarded by the institution (e.g. degree certificate and diploma supplement). However, no other enclosures can be submitted with the transcript of records. University Admissions Finland also accepts electronic transcripts submitted through a few recognized sources, such as Parchment Exchange. For information on which electronic transcript sending services are accepted by University Admissions Finland, please see Electronic Transcripts. If your institution uses one of the acceptable services, you can request for your official transcript of records to be electronically sent to University Admissions Finland. Please note that when using a service like Parchment Exchange, University Admissions Finland only needs to receive the transcript once, contrary to normal document requirements. You are not required to submit a copy of your degree certificate if your transcript of records includes the following information: name of the institution that awarded the degree, the date of issue, the name of the person to whom the degree was awarded and what title/degree it was. University Admissions Finland uses a verification service for degrees completed in the USA. Other English language requirements: TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language: 575/paper-based; PTE (Academic), Pearson’s Test of Academic English: 62.

For international students

To be eligible to apply to the Master’s degree programme in Biomedical Technology, you must have a successfully completed Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in biosciences or information technology, or in a closely related field. If the degree is from a different field, it must include a sufficient amount of studies in biosciences or information technology.

If the applicant has a degree in which the relevant studies in the applicable fields (biosciences and information technology) are insufficient, complementing studies may be required. The required amount and content of these studies is decided for each student individually.
