What will I learn?

The Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Global Health & Development [BASc(GHD)] programme, the first of its kind in Asia, provides students with the knowledge and competencies necessary to succeed within today’s rapidly evolving, international and interdisciplinary environment and to contribute towards solving today’s complex global health and development challenges.

This highly innovative programme will appeal to students who are intrigued by the interconnectedness of disciplines such as medical sciences, social sciences and humanities; are ready to develop a cross-cultural and international outlook; and to become leaders in developing sustainable solutions. It will also be attractive for those who appreciate the rich environment provided by Hong Kong for comparative studies in sustainable health and development.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants taking SAT or ACT and/or Advanced Placement Tests should hold: an overall minimum score of 1800 in SAT Reasoning Test or a composite score of at least 27 in ACT plus Writing; and Grade 3 in three or more Advanced Placement Tests; or a score of 600 or better in each of three subjects in SAT Subject Tests. For applicants following Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) in community colleges: should hold the US High School Graduation Diploma; at least 12 years of pre-university schooling on a full-time basis; and successful completion of IGETC with Grade C or above in each of the subjects. Other English Language Requirements accepted: a score of 583 or better in the paper-based TOEFL; or Grade C or better in English Language at GCSE / GCEO; or Grade C or better in English First Language at IGCSE; or Grade B or better in English Second Language at IGCSE; or other equivalents.

For international students

Competitive Admission Standards:

An International Baccalaureate Diploma with 31 points out of 45 or equivalent

GCE A-Level / International A-Level: Candidates should present at minimum of 2A 1B level subjects, excluding English and Chinese language or equivalent

SAT Reasoning Test / ACT plus Writing and SAT Subject Test / Advanced Placement Test: Candidates should have completed - Redesigned SAT: 1350; SAT Subject Tests: 550 in each of the 3 subjects; AP Exams: Level 3 in each of the 3 subjects or equivalent

You must achieve at least one of the following English Language Requirements to be considered for admission to HKU.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

GCSE / GCEO

Grade C in English Language at GCSE/GCEO;

Grade C in English First Language at IGCSE; or

Grade B in English as a Second Language at IGCSE

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or

Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

SAT Reasoning Test: Sub-scores of 550 in both Critical Reading and Writing in the same attempt of the SAT Reasoning Test (prior to March 2016); or Test scores of 31 in Writing and Language and 30 in Reading in the same attempt of the Redesigned SAT Reasoning Test;

IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module;

TOEFL: A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or 583 in the paper-based test.
