What will I learn?

This programme is specifically designed for graduates in law from non-Common law jurisdictions (notably Mainland China) who wish to acquire an expertise in Common Law as it is practised in Hong Kong and in other common law jurisdictions.

The curriculum for the Master of Common Law extends over one academic year of full-time study. Teaching is in English and candidates shall be required to have an adequate standard of English.

Students are required to complete the compulsory non-credit bearing course and not fewer than 72 credits, including a capstone experience in accordance with the regulations for this degree and the syllabuses. Students may choose courses from the course outlines of individual areas of law below, and courses from any of the specialist programmes, but in any event no more than two courses from other LLM specialist programmes. Students who hold a law degree from a PRC university may not choose courses related to PRC law subjects, except with the approval from Programme Director and the Department Head.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants must comply with the General Regulations and fulfil the following requirements

(1) Hold a degree of Bachelor of Laws with at least second class honours or an equivalent qualification from a university or comparable institution in a non-common law jurisdiction; and

(2) For a candidate who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, shall satisfy the Faculty English language requirement with one of the following recognized English tests (N.B. for admissions purposes, the test score report is regarded as valid within two years of the application deadline):

(i) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - a score of 593 or above (paper-based test) or 97 or above (internet-based test); or

(ii) International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - an overall band score of 6.5 or above.

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
