What will I learn?

The Faculty is the sole tertiary institution in Hong Kong dedicated to training dental undergraduates and postgraduates. Specialty-based Research Areas
Dental materials science:
Design and interpretation of test methods in dental materials science; adhesion promotion in dentistry; dental implant materials; saliva chemistry; mechanical properties of bio-materials; materials in dental technology; dental procedures, equipment and materials: chemistry, physics, and mechanics; surface studies; computational chemistry in synthetic dental biomaterials.

Dental public health:
Epidemiological, health services and behavioural research of oral health status and its determinants; clinical intervention studies on prevention and treatment of common oral health problems and diseases; studies on oral health-related quality of life.

Efficacy of root-canal preparation techniques; mechanical and fatigue properties of root-canal instruments; treatment outcomes of various forms of endodontic therapy; clinical and laboratory studies of endodontics restorative materials.

Evidence-based therapy; tissue integration of implants; biology of oral implants; clinical research.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery:
Cleft lip and palate, navigational surgery and implantology; biology of distraction osteogenesis and its application; 3-D modelling in reconstructive surgery; minimal invasive surgery and 3-D facial soft tissue imaging; qualify of life of oral cancer patients; micro-vascular and micro-neural.

Oral biosciences:
Molecular microbiology pertaining to oral microbiology and pathology; oral candidal infections; biofilm formation; clinical epidemiology of HIV infection; artificial mouth studies; cariology.

Paediatric dentistry:
Early childhood caries; dental anomalies; developmental defects of enamel; cleft lip and palate; remineralising media; dentine bonding agents.

Epidemiological, behavioural and clinical research on periodontal diseases and their prevention and management; basic research on periodontal microflora and host response in the local population.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

To be eligible for admission to the courses leading to a taught postgraduate qualification, a candidate: shall hold a Bachelor's degree of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose. English Language Requirements: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): a score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL; or a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL; or a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - A minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5; or GCE (General Certificate of Education) - Grade C or above; or IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) - Grade C or above; or Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language - Grade C or above.

For international students

The basic qualification necessary for admission to research postgraduate studies is a good honours degree from this University or an equivalent qualification from a comparable institution. In addition, certain degree courses have more specific requirements. Qualifying examinations to test the applicants’ abilities to follow the prescribed courses and/or interviews may be conducted. Applicants with qualifications other than an honours degree are considered on their individual merits.

Applicants who wish to be admitted to higher degrees on the basis of a qualification from a university or a comparable institution outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching and/or examination is not English are required to obtain the following:

(a) a minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as specified below:

Paper-based test

  • An overall score of 550 or above
  • Additional requirement for applicants to the Faculty of Arts except the School of Chinese and the Centre of Buddhist Studies: 4 or above in the Test of Written English (TWE)

Internet-based test

  • An overall score of 80 or above
  • Additional requirement for applicants to the Faculty of Arts except the School of Chinese and the Centre of Buddhist Studies: 25 or above in the Writing section; or

(b) a minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic module); or

(c) grade C or above in the Overseas General Certificate of Education (GCE); or

(d) grade C or above in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE); or

(e) grade C or above in the Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language (CPE);

unless in exceptional circumstances when they are exempted from this requirement.
