What will I learn?

The programme of research is designed in such a way to enable the student to acquire competence in research methods and scholarship and to display sustained independent effort and independent original thought.

The degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) shall be awarded to a student who, on completion of an approved programme of study and research and on fulfilling the coursework requirements for graduation, presents a thesis embodying the results of his/her research and satisfies the examiners in an oral examination (and other examinations if required) in matters relevant to the subject of the thesis.

MPhil students are required to satisfactorily investigate or evaluate a chosen area, to show understanding of the context and significance of the work, and to present a clear, complete thesis of a quality worthy of publication.

The MPhil degree is awarded to a student who completes all stipulated coursework requirements, presents a thesis embodying the results of their research and satisfies the examiners in an oral examination (and other examinations if required) in matters relevant to the subject of the thesis.

Nanomaterials

Various kinds of low dimensional materials for devices and advanced in-situ and operando characterisation techniques.

  • Advanced materials characterisation techniques at the atomic scale, in-situ, and real-time

  • Low dimensional materials: quantum dots, nanowires, nanotubes, and two-dimensional materials
  • Micro/nano electronic devices; carbon-based electronics
  • Nanomaterials for bioelectronics and flexible electronics

Entry requirements

For international students

To register for the degree of MPhil, a student must hold:

A Bachelor’s degree with first or second class honours from a recognised university; OR

Other academic qualifications which are deemed to be equivalent.

The requirements for those who do not have a degree for which English was the language of instruction at a recognised university are:

An overall score of at least 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); OR

A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above for the Internet-based test or 550 or above for the paper-based test.
