Note: You must have at least H3 in the Leaving Certificate, or equivalent, to have Irish as a degree subject at the University of Limerick.

Due to the specializations of the staff, you will receive a unique course in Irish linked to major international disciplines including literature studies, anthropology and folklore, Irish history, nomenclature, and Irish Studies within of the international thought movements of scholarship.

What will I be studying?

As part of your Irish course, you will study the grammar and accuracy of Irish (both written and spoken), and you will study literature, oral culture, and sociolinguistics, through which your skills of reflection, analysis, and persuasion. You will attend tutorials with a special focus on language, grammar, spoken Irish and translation; you will attend lectures on a wide range of subjects within Irish Studies, for example, the autobiography of the Irish language, the tradition of storytelling, the stories of heroism, the old wonders, the lament, the tradition of singing, the Irish prose and poetry, 17th - 19th century Irish language literature, Keating's storytelling,

Graduate Employment

Employment opportunities are available for Irish graduates of the University of Limerick in various fields, for example: teaching, the heritage and culture sector, the Irish language media and journalism, the public sector.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants are required to hold at the time of enrolment the established Leaving Certificate (or an approved equivalent) with a minimum of six subjects which must include: Two H5 (Higher Level) grades and Four O6 (Ordinary Level) grades or four H7 (Higher Level) grades. Subjects must include Mathematics, Irish or another language, and English. Irish Leaving Certificate English: Ordinary Level Grade D or above; TOEFL: 580 (paper based) OR 90 (internet based); IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any component; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Minimum score of 61 (with no section score below 59)

For international students
