What will I learn?

This course allows students to undertake doctoral research in any areas related to Drama and Theatre Studies. PhDs may be conducted in the area of theatre practice (playwriting, direction, devising, etc) and academic research (theatre history, contemporary drama, etc).

Entry requirements

For students from United States

PhD candidates should normally have a high honours standard in a relevant academic discipline at primary degree level or equivalent together with the support of an academic staff member who is approved by the College to supervise the research in terms of its nature and scope. English Language Requirements: IELTS: 6.5 overall; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88; Pearson PTE: 61; Duolingo English Test: 110.

For international students

The minimum qualification necessary to be considered for admission to the PhD programme is a high honours, primary degree (or equivalent international qualification), or ’other such evidence as will satisfy the Head of Department and the Faculty of his/her fitness’ (NUI Galway Calendar). It is more usual, however, for successful applicants to have already gained a Master's degree.
