What will I learn?

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates who wish to proceed to the degree of PhD in any of the main research areas of full-time permanent academic members of staff of the Faculty. Candidates are advised to contact the relevant staff member before applying in order to discuss their proposed topic or area of research.

Candidates, proposed topic, and intended supervisor of research must be approved by the School. The PhD by research may be pursued under the on a full time basis.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

PhD candidates should normally have a high honours standard in a relevant academic discipline at primary degree level or equivalent together with the support of an academic staff member who is approved by the College to supervise the research in terms of its nature and scope. English Language Requirements: IELTS: 6.5 overall; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88; Pearson PTE: 61; Duolingo English Test: 110.

For international students

To be eligible for admission to the PhD programme, a candidate must normally have obtained an LLM or other Master’s degree to honours standard (or equivalent international qualification). However, at a minimum, the candidate must have reached a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree or presented such other evidence as will satisfy the Head of School and the College of his/her fitness.
