Programme Overview

The programme is designed for top graduates who have majored in business, accounting and finance and who wish to pursue a career in accounting, corporate finance, management consulting, and taxation either within the profession or with local or multinational companies. Our focus is not just on the development of technical skills but also on the development of complex problem-solving, critical thinking and softer people skills in our graduates. Over the past five years, alumni of the Master of Accounting programme have consistently performed significantly better than the average in the Final Admitting Examination of Chartered Accountants Ireland.

The Master of Accounting is the leading, longest-established accounting-specialist Master’s degree in Ireland. It has been widely recognised for the quality of its graduates and the accelerated career trajectory that they take, both within Ireland and internationally. Our alumni have gone on to become partners in the Big Four accounting firms or CEOs/CFOs in publicly-listed companies. Consequently, its outstanding reputation is widely recognised within business circles.

What will I learn?

The overall aim of the programme is to instill a systematic and rigorous knowledge of accounting and its related disciplines. Strong emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking, communication and team building skills that successful graduates will require to progress through professional training and gain rapid access to senior management positions in their future career.

How will I benefit?

Successful completion of this programme provides graduates with a significant head-start in the accounting profession, due to the high level of academic rigour within the curriculum and the excellent reputation of the course in the eyes of recruiters.

A significant IT dimension to the curriculum encourages a full command of the tools required for the profession and nurtures a hands-on approach to learning within the classroom. It exposes students to the risks facing businesses today of cyber security and the necessary steps required to alleviate such risks.

The acquisition of knowledge and skills that meet the requirements of professional accounting bodies for entry into their final examinations. For example, our Master of Accounting graduates perform consistently better in the Chartered Accountants Ireland final admitting examinations.

Curriculum

This rigorous course explores a wide range of theories and concepts and develops an array of technical skills in the areas fundamental to the accounting profession, as well as providing a vital stepping stone to graduates preparing for professional examinations. Knowledge acquisition is tested not only through examinations but also via case studies, whilst IT is used extensively throughout.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The normal requirement for entry to a taught Master’s Degree programme is a second class honours degree in a relevant subject. However intending applicants should check the individual requirements listed on the School website, since some degrees may require a higher standard for entry. For applicants who do not have the required minimal entry standard, a year-long qualifying course may be available. In this case relevant work experience may be a requirement. UCD recognise the appropriate minimum score in the following recognised English Language Examinations: International English Language Testing System (IELTS): An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University: A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +. In the computer based TOEFL, a minimum score of 250 is required. A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based based TOEFL (iBT).

For international students

A first class or second class honours grade 1 Business degree. An overall final degree average grade of minimum 63% or minimum UCD GPA of 3.30/4.2 will be required (or equivalent) or an honours primary degree with a minimum of three years relevant work experience.

To have achieved full exemptions from Chartered Accountants Ireland's (ICAI) CAP 1 Examinations.

IELTS - A minimum overall score of 7.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version. The non-academic version is not accepted; TOEFL: A minimum score of 100 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (IBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section; Cambridge Examinations: English language examinations administered by the University of Cambridge: 185+ on Cambridge English scale (with no less than 175 in each skill and use of English). Acceptable Examinations: Proficiency Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2); Advanced Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2); Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 65 and at least 59 for each item. English Test for Academic and Professional Purposes (ETAPP): Grade C1 (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2); Trinity ISE: Trinity ISE IV (C2) with at least merit in each skill category.
