Vision and Values Statement

The ME degree in Electrical Energy Engineering is a two-year programme that educates professional engineers to excel at an advanced technical level, or as a professional engineering manager, in the expanding sustainable power system and smart grid sectors anywhere in the world. The strong emphasis within the programme on the mathematical and analytical underpinnings of the discipline also provide an excellent foundation for entry into advanced research programmes. The programme can be taken by graduates with an honours bachelor's (first cycle) degree in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline. A one-year (three-semester) version of the programme is also available for suitably qualified applicants. Graduates will receive an advanced engineering education in subject areas related to power system analysis & design, power electronics applications & design, sustainable power systems, smart grid communication architectures and electricity market operations.

Individual modules are taught by a strong cohort of experienced and internationally recognised academic staff (forming part of the world-leading Energy Institute for the integration of renewables into power systems), with expertise in all the core areas of Electrical Engineering.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The normal requirement for entry to a Master’s Degree programme is a second class honours degree in a relevant subject. In addition course work and examinations may also be specified by the College at entry; normally these have to be satisfactorily completed in the first year of a Master’s degree programme. IELTS - An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version; A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +. In the computer based TOEFL, a minimum score of 250 is required. A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (IBT).

For international students

An honours undergraduate degree (NFQ level 8) with a minimum upper second class honours or international equivalence in a relevant Engineering programme.

Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0 in each element), or equivalent.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University

  • A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +.
  • A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section

Cambridge Examinations: English language examinations administered by the University of Cambridge: 180+ on Cambridge English scale (with no less than 175 in each skill and use of English).

Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item of both skills profiles.
