The ME in Electronic and Computer Engineering is a two-year programme that educates professional engineers who can excel in the burgeoning worldwide electronic and computer sectors. The programme can be taken by graduates with an honours bachelor's degree in electronic engineering or a closely related discipline. The student is provided with a deep understanding of a wide range of topics pertinent to the electronic and computer hardware and software industries. Knowledge and skills are built through a mix of taught courses, laboratory work, a major project and professional work experience. The qualification meets new international requirements for chartered professional engineers. Teaching methods vary, to suit the wide range of subjects. The strong laboratory component allows students to experience the practical side of electronic engineering, while assignments provide design and problem-solving challenges. In the final year, a substantial project draws together many of the separate strands of learning, with a stress on independent learning and communication skills. Throughout the programme there is a strong emphasis on the mathematical and analytical underpinnings of the discipline providing an excellent foundation for entry into advanced research programmes in academia and industry.

Student Internships

The Professional Work Experience (PWE) module is incorporated into the two-year Masters of Engineering Programme and is designed to integrate a student’s academic and career interests with practical work experience for a 6-8 month period.

The module provides students with the perfect opportunity to gain increased experience and understanding of their chosen field, assess where their strengths and weaknesses lie and maximize their knowledge of the available career possibilities.

Careers & Employability

There are excellent job opportunities available in the ICT sector in Ireland. The Irish Government is to amend the work permit processing system in a bid to attract overseas workers to fill skill gaps in crucial areas like ICT and engineering. The Government has an ongoing commitment to generate thousands of jobs in the ICT sector every year. At present there are as many as 5,000 job vacancies in Ireland’s burgeoning ICT sector and this gap could grow as Ireland hurtles towards becoming the digital capital of Europe.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The normal requirement for entry to a Master’s Degree programme is a second class honours degree in a relevant subject. In addition course work and examinations may also be specified by the College at entry; normally these have to be satisfactorily completed in the first year of a Master’s degree programme. IELTS - An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version; A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +. In the computer based TOEFL, a minimum score of 250 is required. A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (IBT).

For international students

An undergraduate honours degree (NFQ level 8) with a minimum upper second class honours or international equivalence in a relevant Engineering programme.

Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0 in each element), or equivalent.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University

  • A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +.
  • A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section

Cambridge Examinations: English language examinations administered by the University of Cambridge: 180+ on Cambridge English scale (with no less than 175 in each skill and use of English).

Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item of both skills profiles.
