What will I learn?

This one year MSc programme is targeted at graduates aiming to develop a career in the Sport industry and also experienced professionals who wish to enhance their career opportunities within this field. The programme provides graduates with the theoretical knowledge and practical tools and techniques required to solve real life management challenges within the Sport industry.

The programme is informed by the exciting research carried out by our faculty and by Sport industry experts who contribute to both the design and delivery of the programme curriculum. Throughout the programme, students are provided with the opportunity to engage and network with leading figures from the Sport industry.

The programme also offers the unique opportunity to study how high performance sport is managed from government policy to the views of key stakeholders within a sport organisation, such as the CEO, the high performance director, the coach, support staff and athlete.

Careers & Employability

Our graduates who possess skills in the core management areas, are highly valued by employers within the Sports industry. Many graduates are working in Ireland and internationally in a range of areas including national governing bodies, international sport federations, sports marketing and event management agencies, professional sports teams and community sport organisations. Programme Outcomes

  • Critically apply knowledge and understanding of management theory and techniques to a range of complex organisational contexts / issues within the wider sports industry.
  • Identify and critically analyse current trends or policy changes and their implications for sport related organisations.
  • Understand the processes which influence group behaviour and be able to apply leadership skills and function effectively as part of a team utilising skills in listening, negotiating and resolving conflict
  • Communicate effectively through a range of mediums (e.g., oral, written)
  • Self-direct and act autonomously in planning and implementing projects.
  • Plan, conduct and report a programme of original research relevant to the management of sport organisations and/or events.
  • Recognise career opportunities in the sports industry and utilise transferable management skills to develop a career path within the industry
  • Recognise ethical situations and apply ethical and organisational values to those situations

Entry requirements

For students from United States

The normal requirement for entry to a taught Master’s Degree programme is a second class honours degree in a relevant subject. However intending applicants should check the individual requirements listed on the School website, since some degrees may require a higher standard for entry. For applicants who do not have the required minimal entry standard, a year-long qualifying course may be available. In this case relevant work experience may be a requirement. UCD recognise the appropriate minimum score in the following recognised English Language Examinations: International English Language Testing System (IELTS): An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University: A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +. In the computer based TOEFL, a minimum score of 250 is required. A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based based TOEFL (iBT).

For international students

The normal requirement for entry to a taught Master’s Degree programme is a second class honours degree in a relevant subject. For applicants who do not have the required minimal entry standard, a year-long qualifying course may be available. In this case relevant work experience may be a requirement.

Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0 in each element), or equivalent.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University:

A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +; a minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section.

Cambridge Examinations: English language examinations administered by the University of Cambridge: 180+ on Cambridge English scale (with no less than 175 in each skill and use of English).

Acceptable Examinations:

Proficiency Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2).
Advanced Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2)
First Certificate, Grade A (i.e. CEFR Level C1)

Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item of both skills profiles.
