What will I learn?

The main purpose of this project is to intellectually contribute to the construction of an international society where people are blessed with a secure and stable life, free from danger.

Japanese as well as international candidates who are post-graduate students and full-fledged members of society (from Asian countries in particular) are considered for admission. Applicants are requested to demonstrate competence in the social sciences, medical sciences, and humanities and their potential for leadership in the field of Human Security.

Our program covers various educational curricula, because it is jointly offered by four different graduate schools. It is an interdisciplinary program, linking the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences.

This program has four programs—Food and Agriculture for Human Security, Public Health Sciences for Human Security, Human Security and Society, and Human Security and Environment —headed by the Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, and Graduate School of Environmental Studies, respectively. The four schools provide the curricula for understanding the intricacies of various problems related to food, health, regional communities, and environment.

Student must obtain credits from the following subjects:

(1) Major Subjects

(2) Doctor's Dissertation and Seminar

This is compulsory for all students in the doctoral course.

Field of Study: Education and research into the extent to which environmental changes of water, forest, soil, climate, and ecosystems influence people’s lives and communities.

Degree and Certificate

Students in the International Post-Graduate Program in Human Security will belong to one of the four graduate schools. Each school will confer degree certificates to the students satisfying the required conditions of the International Post-Graduate Program in Human Security.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Those who (will) have earned a master's degree by September 30, 2018. Those who (will) have engaged in research activities for at least 2 years at an educational or research institution after their graduation from a university and have been recognized by the Graduate School of Science on the basis of their research performance to have a scholastic ability equivalent or superior to those who have earned a master's degree; Those who will reach 24 years of age by September 30, 2018 and have been recognized by the Graduate School of Science through individual qualification examinations to have scholastic ability equivalent or superior to those who have earned a master's degree.

For international students

Those who have acquired a Master or Professional degree or expect to acquire one by September 2018.

Those who have acquired a degree on par with a Master or Professional degree abroad, or expect to acquire one by September 2018.

Those who have acquired a Master or Professional degree abroad through a correspondent course while residing in Japan, or expect to acquire one by September 2018

Those who have acquired or expect to acquire a Master or Professional degree at educational institution located in Japan that is designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan by September 2018.

Those who have completed a course of the United Nations University, and have acquired or expect to acquire the degree equivalent to Master degree by September 2018.

Those who have completed a course of educational institution which has a course of foreign school or foreign graduate school, or completed that of United Nation University, and are admitted to have achieved an academic standard equivalent to or more than those who possess Master degree by passing the exam and eligibility screening in accordance with clause 2 of article 16 of Graduate School Establishment Standards.

Those who will be 24 years of age or older by the end of September 2018 and, through individual entrance qualification screening, are admitted by the Graduate school of Environmental Studies, Tohoku University to have achieved an academic standard equivalent to or more than those who obtained a Master or Professional degree.
