What will I learn?

The Bachelor of Business (Accounting) equips students with the skills needed for a career in accounting and beyond. Students learn to use accounting systems to record and analyze business activities, employ financial statements to guide investment decisions and use information from cost accounting systems to make decisions, price products, develop operating strategies and evaluate business performance.

Aims and objectives:

The Bachelor of Business (Accounting) course allows students to develop skills that are fundamental to evaluating, analysing and communicating the financial position of an organisation or individual.

The accounting major is designed to prepare individuals in the core areas of financial accounting, management accounting, finance, tax and auditing, in addition to economics and company law. To comply with the National Threshold Learning Standards for accounting, the teaching and learning activities and assessment tasks in the course are designed to instill a range of skills including oral, communicative, presentation, critical analysis, problem solving and group work skills.

Students with studies in Accounting find rewarding work in industry, commerce, the public sector, the financial industry or business consulting and public accounting.

Upon successfully completing the Bachelor of Business (Accounting) students will be able to:

  • Define and integrate theoretical principles applicable to accounting and apply those principles in a range of practices
  • Systematically review and critically evaluate research from a variety of sources in order to make informed judgments on options for innovatively solving a range of problems that arise in business contexts
  • Formulate creative solutions that are fit for purpose and demonstrate cognisance of the impact of business decisions on the triple bottom line
  • Coherently articulate a line of reasoning demonstrating cultural sensitivity and apply a framework to analyze and offer solutions to ethical dilemmas
  • Communicate a range of business arguments by evaluating and implementing alternative communication strategies as appropriate to the audience
  • Build on and continuously develop the intellectual independence to be critical and reflective learners, cognizant of new technologies
  • Work collaboratively in diverse groups

Course structure

For the completion of the Bachelor of Business (Accounting) students are required to complete a total of 24 units (300 credit points).

Career opportunities

An accounting degree can lead to a wide range of positions in the vast, modern global market. You may find career opportunities in professional accounting practices and consultancies, fund management, general management, financial planning or in small businesses. Other roles include business analyst, auditor, and fund accounting officer, taxation accountant and chief financial officer.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Business (Accounting) is professionally accredited through CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Graduates are therefore eligible to apply for membership of CPA Australia (CPA), Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Entry requirements

For international students

  • Applicants must provide documentation of their completed senior high school (Australian Year 12 or its equivalent).
  • The minimum TOEFL score is 20 on each section of the Internet-based test.
  • The minimum IELTS score is 6.0 in all bands.
