What will I learn?

Realizing the new requirement from the International Maritime Organizational (IMO) and vast array of the maritime sector that includes electrical and electronics services, the institute had taken the initiative to develop a programme namely Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons.) in Marine Electrical and Electronics with the support from shipbuilding and ship repair industrial experts. This programme is in tandem with the need of the nation to increasingly liberalize Marine Electrical and Electronics services that include ship communication, ship navigation, ship control & monitoring systems as well as ship weapons system.

Prospective undergraduates will be offered courses/subjects in five sub-areas namely:

  • Electronics System
  • Electrical & Power System
  • Instrumentation & Control System
  • Communication & Navigation System
  • System Technology

The amalgamation of the five sub-areas is meant to provide adequate knowledge to prospective BMEE graduates to venture into the employment areas not only specific to marine but also to those pursuing a career in other broad areas of electrical and electronics services and management.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

UniKL graduates who are:

PEO 1: knowledgeable, competent, and innovative, which will contribute towards the human capital in the marine related industry;

PEO 2: effective leadership and team work skills as well as verbal, non-verbal and interpersonal communication skills to support their role in industry;

PEO 3: committed to the importance of lifelong learning and continuous improvement;

PEO 4: practice professionalism with ethics and social responsibility; and

PEO 5: capable of embarking on business and technopreneurial activities.

Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

PLO 1: Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and engineering specialization in electrical and electronics to wide practical procedures and practices.

PLO 2: Identify and solve broadly-defined electrical and electronic engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using codified methods of analysis specific to their field of activity.

PLO 3: Design solutions for broadly-defined electrical and electronic problems and assist with the design of systems, components or processes to meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

PLO 4: Conduct investigations of broadly-defined electrical and electronic problems; locate and search relevant codes and catalogues, conduct standard tests and measurements.

PLO 5: Apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering tools to broadly-defined engineering activities in electrical and electronic with an awareness of the limitations.

PLO 6: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member in diverse technical teams.

PLO 7: Communicate effectively on broadly-defined engineering activities in electrical and electronic with society, by being able to comprehend the work of others, document their own work, and give and receive clear instructions.

PLO 8: Demonstrate knowledge of the societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to marine engineering technician practice.

PLO 9: Understand and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of engineering technology practices.

PLO 10: Understand the impact of engineering solutions in industrial and marine societal context and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable development.

PLO 11: Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of management, business practices, and technopreneurial competencies.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

All international students must complete at least 12 years of education and obtained certificate in Higher Secondary School equivalent to ‘A’ Level for degree programmes. English language proficiency requirements: IELTS - 5.0 or equivalent; TOEFL- 525 (PBT); 167 (CBT); 120 (IBT) and students who have attained the above test of proficiency in English are exempted from taking any English Placement Test (EPT) / English Preparatory Programs (EPP) courses.

For international students

All international students must have completed at least 12 years of previous education and obtained a Higher Secondary School certificate equivalent to ‘A' Level. Entry requirements may vary from country to country.

Students need to meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements as follows:

IELTS - 5.0 or equivalent

TOEFL- 525 (PBT); 167 (CBT); 120 (IBT)
